Figured we could start one, and talk about any shows you have gone to, specials you saw, etc.

I recently watched the new Ryan Hamilton special on Netflix, and highly recommend it. He reminds me a lot of Jerry Seinfeld with his mannerisms.

There's a new Ryan Hamilton special? Big fan of his since the 2017 Happy Face one. His hot air balloon bit is one of my all time favorites.

We're going to see Nate Bargatze for the second time this fall and very excited about it. He's one of my current favorites.

Ah, yeah, happy face is the one I watched. Didn't realize it was that old. His Olympics bit was hilarious.

Orlando Leyba
Richard Jeni (this is old school)

Do yourself a favor and google these comedians and watch them on u-tube. Your welcome in advance.

Started watching the Adam Devine one and it's not very good. It's like he was doing a rough draft. Needed some reworking.

Jo Koy has a new special on Netflix and it's hilarious. He never gets mentioned along with the top comedians but I'd say he's right up there.

Here's a couple of my reviews in whatever order I thought of them or recently watched them (all of these are on Netflix). And it's sad that I feel the need to say this sentence, but remember that comedy is subjective.

Ricky Gervais, Humanity - Easily my favorite set on Netflix. Absolute brilliance. Gervais is one of the funniest and most productive comedians out there, including his tv shows (Office, Extras, etc).

Ellen Degeneres, Relatable - Another fantastic one to watch. Her set is tightly interwoven from start to end, including the setup/punchlines that she does so well with a little bit of what her audience wants to see (e.g., her dancing). Do yourself a favor and watch her interview with Letterman (on Netflix) and listen to her interview with Conan (podcast) first to appreciate the set even more.

Katherine Ryan, Glitter Room - Ok but not amazing. Few good laughs, but nothing to write home about. I'l give her credit for audience interaction though.

Mike Epps, Only One Mike - Skip it. This is my first time to see him perform so maybe I'm not used to his act. I felt like I was watching a guy brag about himself for an hour.

Adam Devine, Best Time of Our Lives - Skip this one too. Was he high while performing or did he just forget to rehearse? Or both.

Comedians of the World series - There are a few in here that are enjoyable. The entire series is really hard to get through though. For me it's the language and cultural barrier. I just finished Brazil and I guess I just can't relate to comedy about people in the 'hood in Brazil. I enjoyed Ivan Decker, if you just want a short set of somebody new.

Jo Koy, Live from Seattle and Comin' in Hot - The first five minutes of Live from Seattle are absolutely hilarious. Overall, very good acts.

Ken Jeong, You Complete Me, Ho - I thought this one was pretty meh. Lots of story-telling about the Hangover and other projects, a couple jokes, but not what I hoped for.

Wanda Sykes, Not Normal - Lots of poking fun at Trump as one would predict, but overall better than I expected. I just had a really low bar going into this one, maybe.

Dave Chapelle, (couple specials) - These are great. Absolutely great, and offer some interesting backstory to everything that went down with him at Comedy Central.

Kevin Hart, (lots of specials) - If you enjoy Kevin Hart, you'll like these. He's one of the hardest working guys in stand-up comedy. I felt his newest one, Irresponsible, was actually his weakest.

Anthony Jeselnik, Thoughts & Prayers and Fire in the Maternity Ward - If you are ok with humor that will make you cringe, check him out. I really appreciate his delivery. You think he's going to go with the obvious punchline and then he takes one from out of left field.

Nate Bargatze, The Tennessee Kid - I don't remember much about this one, but I do remember that you should watch his set on The Standups first because he does a few callbacks to those jokes.

Hannah Gadsby, Nanette - This is extremely difficult to compare to anything else because it is so different. I cannot emphasize enough that before watching this, you should listen to her interview with Conan O'Brien on his podcast (Conan Needs a Friend) because it will give you such a different perspective to the show. Just be aware before you watch this one that it isn't your "traditional" stand-up comedy and you'll probably either love it or hate it.

Jimmy Carr, The Best of Ultimate Gold Greatest Hits - I really like Jimmy Carr. I watch The Big Fat Quiz of the Year every year (once it hits YouTube) and he does some great stand-up. This special was funny but it really is a greatest hits so be prepared that it won't have much flow.

Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias, (lots of specials) - Similar review to Kevin Hart. If you're a fan, you'll like it. There's just so many now.

Brian Regan, Nunchuks & Flamethrowers - If you like Brian Regan (I'm a huge fan) then you'll enjoy this set. It's just not his best ever. His first album (Live) is his best, in my opinion.

Tig Notaro, Happy to Be Here - Yes, all things yes. Tig is a brilliant comedian. Her album (Live, pronounced with the soft i) is, I would argue, one of the most amazing stand-up sets ever. She performed that set right after she was diagnosed with cancer. She will drag you along with some of her routines, Andy Kaufman-style. Her deadpan humor isn't for everybody though.

I think Adam Devine is just riding his popularity wave from TV and movies. He's obviously not a skilled stand up but it's like Jay Leno said on Joe Rogan's podcast. The reason he always liked going to new places to do his routines was because the biggest hurdle for new stand up comedians is getting the crowd to think you are a funny person. Once they do, they give you the benefit of the doubt and laugh even when you suck. So the only way to get an honest crowd is to go where people don't know you.

Devine just had a bunch of fans happy to see him live that laughed at anything he said. I'm a big fan of Workaholics so I enjoyed watching him for the first half hour or so even though I didn't laugh really. I think I laughed hard at one joke having to do with tight buttholes of course.

that was my thought as well. I love watching comedians talk about standup so it kind of sticks out now when you watch a guy that clearly hasn't polished his stuff. he definitely seems like someone that is in front of a friendly crowd.

I do like his defense mechanism though. After any joke that doesn't do well just go "that was stupid" to make you feel sorry for him.

I do wonder if he pisses off other stand ups that had to work their asses off to sell out theaters, and he just walks in to one because he's famous from TV with no real stand up experience.

Pete Holmes kind of talks about this in an episode of Crashing. He finds this college kid that's pretty funny opening for him on a college tour, convinces him to ditch his classes for the week and come to NY with him, and as he is about to go on for his first time at the comedy cellar (one of his biggest dreams ever), he realizes the kid is cousins with somebody famous, so Holmes is actually opening for him that night.

up and coming guys probably are. but the top people probably just shrug their shoulders because they know what's going on. they might be a little disappointed because it makes their passion look like any goober can go up there and get a laugh when that's not always the case.

I guess it kind of is the culture we are in now. Charlie Sheen did a tour selling out theaters because he was crazy and famous and no one had any idea what he was going to do.

That Catch Me Outside punk girl actually did a tour. I saw HoB here in houston selling tickets for her show where she was just going to talk and sing. It sold a lot of tickets.

You tube stars can do the same.

I watched it too and although funny at times, he's trying to tap into the emotional/serious connection with is audience. It's too forced IMO, and my wife commented that she would be pissed if she paid to go see him live. Throughout the show, he has these weird Dr. Phil moments where he whispers into the microphone. If I want to reflect on my life, I go to Church. Not to a standup comedy routine.

Saw Jo Koy live last year and he used a lot of those jokes in his Netflix special. I still thought they were funny.

I really like the new Aziz standup - although it's less traditionally funny as is it like life lessons and wisdom w/ some humor. Seems like this is a new trend a la Neal Brennan, Hasan Minhaj (that I've seen recently)

Kevin Hart's new special, Irresponsible, I gave up after like 5 minutes. Have loved his older stuff but it seems like the guy is now just resorting to as much foul language in each and every sentence as possible. If it were edited for language, there would only be about 20min of audio in a 60min special. I'm no prude whatsoever and can have a great laugh with foul comics, but his new special was just ridiculous. Not to mention, he's praying in the box as he's being wheeled out and then drops probably 100 g-d's in about 5 minutes time.

Recently discovered Nate Bargatze and he's awesome. The new Jo Koy special was very good. Also liked Iliza Shlesinger's Elder Millennial special, haven't watch the new one after that. Ali Wong's specials have been really good as well.

I'll preface to say that I cuss a good deal. I listened to KH on JRE early this year. He was so inspiring and just sounded wonderful. I decided to give his standup a chance. I turned it off after about 5 mins. I just can't take the constant cussing. It's lazy and obnoxious. I can't listen listen to female comedians because they are the worst at trying to be over the top.
Texaggie7nine
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Rogan cusses alot in his sets. Cussing is a great tool for funny.

Those that say, well if they are really talented they would be just as funny without cussing. That's like saying, well lebron James should play with an arm tied behind his back if he really was talented.

^ Any of those appropriate to watch with your kids?

I'm a huge Gaffigan fan and took my entire family to see him here in Dallas. Did not disappoint.

I agree that comedians who cuss and use crude bits are not that original. The ones that have clean shows are touring the country making millions. There are a lot of families out that that want to enjoy comedy, but there's just too much smut to wade through.
