I know this isn't for everyone. But my son and I BOTH really enjoyed this book series. It's a good other side of the coin away from Dog Man, Captain Underpants, and Whimpy Kid. Encouraged my kid to have a goal, work hard, have some honor, respect, and step up! Vs. those former books encourage grab ass. Which there is a time and place for both. Just a good reminder of who you can be if you put in a little work.

I'll show up for every one of those. Eggers is now my favorite director simply because of how he dives 1000% into the world of the film. No dumbing it down for the "modern audience". He creates an experience, the closest thing we get to fairy tales in modern cinema.

I agree, I've seen enough and enjoyed enough of his work that he's worth the price of admission. If he's selling, I'm buying.

Can't say that I'm super fired up for yet another Romeo & Juliet and Christmas Carol movie... there are just a ton of those. His version of those will no doubt be excellent however, as was Nosferatu. I would just like to see him explore less familiar waters like he did in The Witch. He's relatively young so it's encouraging that we've many more years of his films. The Knight, Labyrinth sequel, Rasputin & a possible Western sound amazing.

Agreed on the Romeo and Juliet movie, but I haven't really watched a version of that story in a long time so I'm game to see what he'd do with it.

I'm a sucker for Christmas movies especially the Christmas Carol, so Eggers directing Dafoe as Scrooge will definitely put my butt in the seat.

The Rasputin and medieval story just seem like natural fits for Eggers.

But its Labyrinth and the idea of a western directed by him that piques my interest the most I think.

The trailer for this was oddly uninteresting. It just felt like a mishmash if war scenes.

I'm assuming there's a bigger narrative woven into all this, but agreed that as a trailer it's kinda hard to follow.

Per Gemini AI

What Was the Mosquito Bowl?
  • When and Where: Played on Christmas Eve, 1944, on the island of Guadalcanal in the Pacific Theater.
  • The Teams: It was a fierce, unofficial football game between the 4th and 29th Marine Regiments of the 6th Marine Division.
  • The Roster: The 65 players on the field included an extraordinary concentration of former college football stars, All-Americans, and team captains who had set aside their athletic careers to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
  • The Game: Nicknamed the "Mosquito Bowl" because of the island's swarms of insects and humid, malaria-thick jungle conditions, the game was played on a rough dirt and coral field watched by roughly 1,500 cheering Marines.
  • The Outcome: Intended as touch football, it quickly devolved into a full-contact, bloody clash that ended in a 0-0 tie.
Key Players & the Tragic Aftermath
  • The Central Figures: The story famously follows college standouts such as John McLaughry (Brown University), Bob Bauman, Tony Butkovich (Purdue/Missouri), and Dave Schreiner (Wisconsin).
  • The Battle of Okinawa: Just three months after the game, the division shipped out for the Battle of Okinawaone of the bloodiest and costliest campaigns in the Pacific War.
  • The Human Cost: Of the 65 men who played in the Mosquito Bowl, 15 were killed in the fighting at Okinawa, marking a staggering loss of young American athletic talent in a single engagement.

There was a really good segment on CBS Sunday Morning News interviewing Peter Berg about the movie. It sounded like the mosquito bowl game was only a small part of the movie and the majority was war...basically what that last trailer showed.
