That's disappointing. Not sure how anything can compete with the original. I have to return some video tapes.

So this looks to have a fairly significant effect on the 2026 blockbuster slate...

The fourth Marvel Spider-Man movie was tentatively set to release summer 2026, rumored for July.

Dune: Messiah was set to release December 18, 2026.

But now, with Holland doing Nolan's next movie, slated for July 17, 2026, there's no way the fourth Spider-Man releases the same month, or likely that summer at all.

Also, Spider-Man's filming has pushed Dune: Messiah's filming from 2025 to early 2026 (due to Zendaya's availability), meaning I would be shocked if Dune: Messiah now makes that December 2026 date.

So, my guess is, Dune: Messiah moves to spring or summer 2027, while the fourth Spider-Man takes November/December 2026.

Either way, it seems power couple Tom Holland and Zendaya now rule Hollywood and are dictating the schedules of some of the biggest blockbusters set to release. In 2026 alone, Holland will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, then will star in Christopher Nolan's next, along with the fourth Spider-Man movie. While Zendaya will star in the fourth Spider-Man movie and Dune: Messiah, likely within six months of each other, if not sooner.

Pretty crazy.

This has to be a make or break stretch for Holland? Outside of his Spider-Man, he's been kind of a dud, imo.

There's a lot I haven't seen him in, and some movies which i've seen but I don't remember him in at all, but he did ok in Uncharted and The Devil All the Time. But I think he needs to work on his range. Which is why I find him an odd choice for a Nolan movie, kinda like John David Washington in Tenet.

Yeah, I liked him in Uncharted…not his fault that Wahlberg was so badly miscast

So I (along with just about every other pundit) was completely off on this one. I'll let Jeff Sneider explain below why this is such an incredibly weird move...

Quote:

Mr. Holland's Opus: Sony Dates Spider-Man 4 for July 2026, Just One Week After Christopher Nolan's New Film

On Friday morning, Sony dropped a bombshell announcement - the studio plans to release Tom Holland's new Spider-Man movie on July 24, 2026. That's just one week after Universal releases Christopher Nolan's untitled new movie, which will star Matt Damon and… Tom Holland.

This makes no sense for a variety of reasons, so let's dive in, shall we?

For starters, I've confirmed with sources that, as you might expect, Universal has already locked down IMAX and other premium format screens for several weeks for Nolan's next film, so right off the bat, I can tell you that Spider-Man 4 will miss out on precious extra revenue from those IMAX screens.

On a pure box office basis, Week 2 of Nolan's next film is likely going to gross north of $40 million, and I know that Sony knows that the summer box office is competitive, but I don't understand throwing yourself in the way of a juggernaut, even if you are one yourself.

I mean, Holland and his reps can't be too happy right now. He needs to prove himself outside of the Spider-Man franchise, and now Spider-Man 4 is going to eat into the box office haul of Nolan's movie, which is rumored to be about helicopter cops - not vampires.

And yeah, sure, Sony has created 'The Summer of Tom' with this positioning, and it's cool to dominate the cultural conversation for a month, as Holland is poised to do come July 2026, but wouldn't it have been better for his career to have these two movies spaced out rather than cannibalizing each other? I would think that the actor would wantthe distance, and would want people talking about him in both the summer and the winter, but release date decisions may, in fact, be above his pay grade.

Oddly enough, back-to-back release dates didn't seem to hurt another young star back in 2002, when Leonardo DiCaprio had Gangs of New York and Catch Me If You Can open within five days of each other. Those movies cemented DiCaprio as a movie star post-Titanic after The Beach failed to do so, just as some of Holland's choices - Cherry, anyone? - have done little to elevate his career.

And listen, I know that these two films aren't releasing the same day, and they're coming out a week apart, which is par for the course during the crowded summer blockbuster season. But what I don't know is Sony's motivation here. Is the studio's goal here to gin up its own #Barbenheimer or draft on the PR winds of Nolan's next movie?

If so, that strategy is doomed to fail, as the #Barbenheimer phenomenon developed organically on social media, while Barbie and Oppenheimer were diametrically opposing films. Whatever Sony's motive, the release date strikes me as short-sighted… and potentially temporary.

If this is a game of chicken, which is kind of what it looks like from the outside, then Sony will blink and move Spider-Man 4 to the holidays, where No Way Home thrived to the tune of $1.9 billion worldwide.

While Nolan is due for a flop given his sterling track record at the box office - and no, Tenet doesn't count against him I wouldn't bet against him coming off his Oscar win for Oppenheimer. Yet Sony's Tom Rothman seems to be doing just that, believing Spider-Man to be the true juggernaut.

Perhaps Rothman has something special up his sleeve - like further adventures featuring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as past Peter Parkers. Obviously, it has been done before, but that kind of reunion might give Rothman the confidence to take on Nolan. You just never know if Rothman is an Irrational Confidence guy (shoutout to Bill Simmons), as he's a showman who has never backed down from a fight.

We're still nearly two years away from when the bell rings on this box office battle, so stay tuned to see if Holland stays on a collision course with himself in July 2026.

And speaking of collision courses, there are a few of them going on here, as THR reports that Dune: Messiah will actually begin shooting in mid-2025, not at the top of 2026, which begs the question of how big a role Zendaya will have in Spider-Man 4.

Those two mega-productions appear to be on a collision course, and if Dune: Messiah does shoot next year, then will Greig Fraser return as DP, or will he be too busy with Matt Reeves' sequel to The Batman? Can he do both, or will he have to make a tough choice next year? Champagne problems, indeed… but worth noting for fans.

I think I'm tapped out on Ke Huy Quan. Congrats on your oscar, but just not excited to see anything new with him.
His Oscar exchange with RDJ at last year's awards was a bit awkward for me and I can't shake it....

Luca Guadagnino's (Challengers, Call Me by Your Name) next movie starring Daniel Craig. Man, I don't know if I like the movie's look. It looks like they used a lot of miniature stuff for some shots and you can tell. The Big Picture had discussed this in some podcasts over the summer and hyped it up. In theaters in November.

While I think the cinematography for the more traditional/real-life scenes looks incredible, yeah, some of those other shots do look a little goofy. That said, apparently ayahuasca plays a role in the plot, so a lot of that stuff is meant to be more "trippy" on purpose. I assume we're seeing/experiencing certain things how Craig's character is seeing/experiencing them when he's high. Regardless, this is a great trailer and I love the "All Apologies" cover.

Mission: Impossible 8 trailer in November, Superman trailer in December. And those two should just be scratching the surface in terms of big-name trailers for 2025, releasing over the next couple months, one of my favorite times of the movie-going year...
