Blame the attention span of millennials. Years ago, studios found that a certain age demographic would click out of a trailer if they weren't grabbed within the first few seconds. Literally, that's all the time they would give trailers. So, in order to keep them watching, some genius idiot decided to preview the trailer before the trailer.

I'm absolutely going to watch that and probably love it.
The only question I have is if Chalemet has it in him to be that little extra level of crazy that Wilder and Depp have in them naturally.

Yeah his performance comes off a bit weird in the trailer. Maybe it will grow on me.
Also the Oompa Loompa seemed too small.

Might be great as a prequel with him getting a little more weird by the end.
I thought Chalamet was a good choice for a young Wonka, but, man, that trailer is flat. None of the flamboyance and energy that Wonka has. Hopefully the film is better, but that's not a good first look.wangus12 said:

Did whoever do this also do the Fantastic Beast series? This trailer felt like you could replace Chalemet and chocolate with Redmayne and it'd just be another one of those movies.
Spot on comparison, but not the same team. It's from the Paddington filmmakers, which, by all accounts, are great movies, but man, I just don't see it here. Would love to proven wrong, though.
My only hope is that he continues to get more flamboyant as the movie goes on.
Fun fact about the original Willy Wonka -- it flopped in theaters (made only $4M) and remained in obscurity until it started airing on TV in the 80's. Then it gained cult status.
I bet they could make a pretty penny if they re-released Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory 3 months before this prequel as a marketing ploy. I'm sure that would cost way more money than it's probably worth but it would be a nice touch.
The guy who played Charlie is also a veterinarian now in Dallas.
Also, the boat ride scene is still terrifying.
