I just rewatched Weddings Crashers and Dodgeball recently and was nostalgic for the early 2000s golden age of R rated comedies. I miss that Will Ferrell , Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller era where we got 1-2 classic R rated comedies a year for a while.

Throw in the Apatow movies of that era as well, and I'm right there with you. That said, between No Hard Feelings and a new movie from the Please Don't Destroy guys in August, this summer thankfully looks to be inching back that direction…

This movie is going to be huge, right? It seems like it's going to grab the kid audience as well as anyone who is nostalgic for Mario.

Yeah, I'm seeing multiple projections that it could do a billion worldwide, and I have no doubt. As long as it's good, of course.

Hopefully this means a new trailer soon. I wasn't expecting one until late April/early May, with GOTG3, but with Shazam this week or John Wick next week would make sense, too, then maybe one final/shorter trailer in June.

With filming set for the fall, I would guess this is likely a late 2024 release. Tarantino has said he has a limited series he's written and wants to direct as well, so this won't be the last Tarantino anything ever, but man, I was not ready for this last theatrical effort so soon. I knew his tenth would be his last, but I figured we had another couple years before anything was even ready. That said, no matter what he says now, I just can't see him retiring theatrically for good...

Also, this sounds like it's either loosely or directly based on Pauline Kael. My guess is the former, with some added/alt-universe QT signature element infused into the story, but who knows.

$150M/$130M, no matter how you slice it, is INSANE for a romantic comedy.

Not sure if this is the right thread but not sure where else to put it.

Josh Gad got into a little bit of trouble with retweeting this picture of the live action Hunchback of Notre Dame. The cast is perfectly cast, visually at least. But alas, he had to recant saying it was fan-made but he hopes the movie can be made.

Peter Capaldi as Frollo and Gad and Gadot as Quasimodo and Esmerelda would be perfect. The script is already written and Gad is indeed producing it, but don't think they can make a 2024 release if they still don't have a cast. Hoping for a late 2025 release at the earliest, right?

Hunchback was a dark movie, even in its Disney-fied cartoon form (and given the source material, completely tracks). Wonder if they'd be able to pull off a PG rating with a live action remake or if they'd have to go up to PG-13.

Would be neat to see a more adult modern day adaptation of the original novel. Feels like we're due for one.

For sure, the whole city in flames and heavy religious gaslighting doesn't lend itself to being a super family friendly film.

Remember just a couple years ago when theaters were as good as "dead," no one would ever go back, and streaming was the future? Well, fast forward to March 2023 and we're now looking at a $30M opener, two $40M+ openers, and a $70M opener, all this month, just as nearly every studio is scrambling to figure out how to actually make money from streaming. Now, we can also add Apple and Amazon as theatrical distributors, which means more mid-budget movies in theaters, nation-wide, just like the good old days. Because, as always, theatrical is where the real money is. This is how it should be, btw; treat a movie's theatrical run as "marketing" for its eventual streaming appearance...

As a married man with 3 kids under the age of 5, I was really liking this era of straight to streaming releases. I miss going to the theatre so bad though so I get your point. I think I've been to the theatre 3 times the past 5 years.

  • Once to watch Marry Poppins Returns (for the wife although it was enjoyable as I don't mind a good musical from time to time)
  • End Game Re-release (again for the wife as she got real into Marvel after our first when Disney+ had them all streaming and I can take it or leave it. I'll enjoy them but not clamoring for them like most it seemed)
  • Most recently to see Top Gun Maverick.

Also, doesn't popcorn taste so much better in the theatre? And now most theatres have alcohol makes it a pretty nice evening.

Thank God. I'm on the older side of Gen Z and greatly prefer watching a movie in theaters because you're forced to pay attention and watching it with a crowd is so much better than just by yourself or with a few others.

Good news, because I swear if they put out a Scorsese/Leo movie directly to streaming on Apple...

haven't had time to read the article yet, but i wonder how long those theatrical runs will be?

That's kind of my worry. They might be very limited runs on the coasts just to qualify for awards.

Apple and Amazon have already been doing limited theatrical runs in New York and LA for a couple years now. Usually only for two or three weeks, in only a couple theaters in each city. This will be nation-wide, for "multiplexes" and the like. Maybe not quite 3000+ screens, but they won't at all be limited runs either.

Yes, that's good news that these studios are putting more movies into the theaters first before streaming. I truly do believe seeing a movie in the theater is a more magical experience that's worthwhile for many movies. But what remains to be seen is whether the audience will return. Are studios going to extend the theatrical window and push out the streaming release date? Are they going to make streaming rentals more expensive or at least somewhat as expensive as the theatrical viewing experience?

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink (especially when that drink of water is gonna be brought straight to the horse within 3 months at a cheaper price in its comfy, custom built stall).

And I'm truly not trying to be a Debbie downer, I'm legit wondering if they're gonna do something to push more people back into theaters.

it's all going to come down to finding the sweet spot for how long the theatrical release is exclusive, right?

if that period is too long, you piss off your customers and potentially lose subscribers.

if that period is too short, too many people just skip the theatrical release because they can watch it for "free" at home.

I for one don't subscribe to streaming services for their movies, for me it comes down to the quantity and quality of their shows. So even if they extended the theatrical release date before releasing to streaming that wouldn't change my mind about a subscription.

This is the bigger issue IMO.

Honestly I think the people are already showing them that they want to return to theaters. Just look at this year's box office.
