theaters were always the problem with NC-17 content and so called "community standards". they would get pressure not to carry those movies or even clauses in leases for their mall space, etc.

I see no reason why in the streaming age we would not see more NC-17 level content for major movies. some of those platforms already have some NC-17 stuff.

The only NC-17 film I've ever seen is Striptease. So I don't even think I know what NC-17 actually means. Surely not straight up porn?

Like, would Game of Thrones be considered NC-17?

I feel like a whole lot of HBO and Netflix content would be NC-17 for sex and/or violence (GoT, Euphoria, Altered Carbon come to mind) but those are tv shows and not movies.

If Netflix wants this to be released in theaters for awards consideration that becomes an issue.

Not much of an issue really. They can always find a independent theater especially in LA where more than 2 dozen still exist. And for the Oscars the criteria is very low. Some artsy films run in only a handful of theaters.

Current Academy Awards rules (under Rule Two, Eligibility) require that a film be shown in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County for a theatrical qualifying run of at least seven consecutive days, during which period screenings must occur at least three times daily.

That rule was relaxed for pandemic but has been reinstated I belive.
