Man, another batch of critics just saw this in Venice and every one of them are RAVING about the movie. To the point where, in this insanely early Oscar season, this already feels like the film to beat. Apparently Oscar noms are a lock for acting (both Driver and Johansson), direction, screenplay, and Best Picture, according to reaction after reaction.

For Driver, in particular, this might be his apex. Over the next four months he has this, the buzzed about The Report, and of course Episode IX. He's not only earning earning Oscar buzz for Marriage Story but for The Report as well. Dude might have TWO Oscar nominations this season while also staring in one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. Crazy.

This looks like Borat meets any terrible Saturday Night Live-inspired movie from the '90s and I am all in.

The web series is hilarious. Definitely worth watching a few. They're super short, too.

So, instead of a masked killer stalking sorority girls, it's a group of satanic Skull & Bones males killing sorority girls as some long-standing ritual. And the surviving sisters team up and fight back with "Grrrrl Power." Thanks for revealing all that in the trailer.

As of tonight, now that we've basically reached the end of the Toronto Film Festival, at least in terms of premieres (save for The Irishman at the end of the month at the NYFF), here's a quick summary of where everything seems to be shaking out, as the public finally gets to start seeing some of this stuff on Thursday (with The Goldfinch and Hustlers)...

Out of those, I would say Ad Astra, Ford v Ferrari, Knives Out, and Marriage Story are the four with seemingly over-the-moon unanimous praise. With Hustlers basically coming out of nowhere to be a huge festival hit as well, and an apparent box office force this weekend (though no Best Picture buzz or anything like that).

In terms of acting, the two most talked about names for Best Actor have consistently been Adam Driver for Marriage Story and - wait for it - Adam Sandler for Uncut Gems. For Best Actress, Scarlett Johansson for Marriage Story and Renee Zellweger for Judy.

If I had to pick ONE movie that's getting ALL the buzz, though, from direction to the script to the acting, the "it" Oscar movie so far is definitely Marriage Story. But in terms of pure audience pleasers, Ford v Ferrari and Knives Out are apparently the most all-around good time we'll have at the theater this fall.

Of course, it's still early, but now that the vast majority of the contenders have screened, we do have a pretty good idea what's what at this point. That said, there are ALWAYS surprises. It'll be a while until anyone sees 1917, Bombshell, The Good Liar, The Irishman, Little Women, Queen & Slim, The Rise of Skywalker, etc, many of which could and likely will put a dent in the race...

Agreed. Would love it if it beat all of these out, and it very well could.
