No idea how this movie is going to do... I'm guessing it underperforms the studios expectations.
I personally really like the Borderlands games and I think this movie looks really good, but I'm not sure if a bunch of people are going to get off the couch to go see it. Hopefully it is really good and word of mouth helps it.

This is somehow getting insanely good reviews. Paramount publicly screened it this week, two months in advance, and allowed social media reactions after, which at least shows their confidence it. Nothing about the plot/conceit makes any damn sense to me, but apparently it's incredibly fun and emotional. We shall see, but if so, it could end up being a big surprise hit this fall.
What doesn't make sense. This looks like a pretty classic tale, to me. 2 friends both living under some sort of oppression. They find something that gives them a chance to change their circumstances and disagree about how to do it.
This is basically Xavier/Magneto disagreeing on how to prove mutants belong in the real world.

From what I remember of the cartoon growing up, and definitely from the movies, is that the only reason Transformers transform is to disguise themselves on Earth. So if they're not on Earth, why in the hell would they turn into cars on Cybertron? Why is transforming even a thing there? Also, all the character designs look to be mostly based on their Earth iterations, which, in turn, were based on the Earth vehicles/objects they transformed into. So, seeing as they haven't even been to Earth yet in this story, that aspect doesn't make much sense either.
Look, I get it, it's a dumb kids movie, I shouldn't be thinking too hard about it, etc. It just stood out too me, that's all. Kind of like how the world of the Cars movies makes absolutely no sense either when you really break it down.

In the original cartoon, they were made by an alien race to sell as military or consumer goods and they rebelled against their alien masters.
In other entertainment sources they generally transform as an evolutionary thing. Generally, speaking they always can transform, they just change what they transform into to match Earth vehicles. Edit: To clarify, once you get past sentient machines, it isn't that hard to get to machines altering their forms for an advantage.
The real answer is Hasbro always has them transform, because it is their gimmick.

He was supposed to direct the third Quiet Place movie. I wonder if this ends up being that or is another spinoff in that world.
Nichols wrote a draft of A Quiet Place: Day One for Paramount, but ended up dropping out due to creative differences. And while it sounds like pieces of that draft made it into the final product, Paramount owns his draft either way, so Nichols can't use anything from it here.
That said, I listened to a podcast interview with Nichols last month for The Bikeriders and he said before that project he had been developing an original sci-fi/alien movie for a couple years, when 20th Century Fox asked if he wanted to write/direct a remake of the old Alien Nation series on Fox, but as a movie. He eventually agreed, melded his original idea with that IP, and the project was pretty far into development when Fox was bought by Disney, and Disney axed it. They told him they already had Star Wars and Alien now and didn't need another alien project.
So, the current speculation is that Nichols has decoupled his old, original sci-fi/alien idea from the Alien Nation IP, and is moving forward with his original plan from way back when, with Brad Pitt attached.
