I finished The Heretic's Daughter last night. I had high hopes for it, but it just didn't grab my attention. The topic (Salem Witch Trials) is fascinating, though.

Getting close to finishing Killing Pablo by Mark Bowden. This was the primary source material for the first two seasons of Narcos on Netflix. It's a little dry but picks up the pace as the manhunt intensifies after he disappears from prison. Was hoping it went a little more in to the actual salacious lifestyles of the narcos but it's based more on the actual hunt to bring him down than Escobar himself.

Going to start Hue' 1968 next, also by Mark Bowden (total coincidence as it was Christmas gift).

I may even attempt a re-read of all five GOT's before the final season in April.

Do you happen to remember which episode it is? I couldn't find it and Google was no help either.

Love Thy Body - Nancy Pearcey - Answering Hard Questions about Life and Sexuality This is interesting. You probably would not like it if you are not of my worldview

All-American Murder: The Rise and Fall of Aaron Hernandez, the Superstar Whose Life Ended on Murderers' Row: James Patterson Found this on the library Libby app. Short easy read and interesting if you are a sports fan

This book tempts me but I read the reviews and a few said it's kind of choppy. I'm also not sure I would like the tone of the book if it's Tribe A = Good, Tribe B = Bad.

I have Audible since I drive long commutes. However if you don't care about having new or specific books you can easily get a lot of content free. Thus I am considering dropping it.

Currently reading: A Voyage for Madmen by Peter Nichols - It's about 9 men who raced to be the first person to sail around the globe without stopping. Enjoying it so far.

Currently listening via Audible: The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert by Rosaria Champagne Butterfield - It's about a lesbian who not only converted to Christianity but became a reformed presbyterian pastor's wife.

So based on your post I decided to read A Voyage for Madmen. Got a quarter way in a thought I think I've read this. Got three-fourths way in and thought well crap, I've definitely already read this.

Just finished The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher. I liked Dresden, but didn't necessarily enjoy the occult theme. This was okay. It was mostly fun but at times dry & wooden in its exposition. Never been into steampunk, but I enjoyed the setting in this one.

Now starting up Artemis by Andy Weir

Starting off on a bit of a sidetrack. Oldest granddaughter (age 10) started reading Harry Potter in December so I told her I would reread them so we could discuss. However not wanting to carry my big Harry Potter books around with me I've continued to e-read other books when out. On good side retired at end of December so have the time.

So far:
1) Peter V. Brett's The Daylight War (Demon Cycle #3) - Downloaded first 4 of this 5 book set at good price so locked in. B+
2) J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone A-
3) J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets A
4) J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban A
5) Peter V. Brett's The Skull Throne (Demon Cycle #4) B
6) J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire A-
Feb
7) J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix A-
8) Preston and Child's Verses for the Dead (Pendergast series #18) B
9) J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince A-

Neuromancer - Gibson: B+
Very unique steampunkish book, a few odd quirks, but overall solid. Will read/audible the sequels.

The Last Wish - Sapkowski: B
Sword of Destiny - Sapkowski: B
Witcher short stories. Entertaining and good back story, but I wanted more meat. That's the nature of short stories I guess. Will circle back and read/audible the novels soon.

Current audiobook - Skyward - Sanderson

Almost all my "reading" is via Audible now. So far, I've listened to:

Oathbringer, by Brandon Sanderson (actually started this one in December);

Leviathan Wakes, by James S.A. Corey;

and just started War of the Wolf, by Bernard Cornwell.

I finally got back to reading in 2018, though still have a hard time finding time to do it. I picked up where I left off on Clash of Kings about 4 years ago and ended up reading everything that GRRM put out in the GOT universe. From a rec on one of the GOT threads, I tried Sanderson's Radiant series and now into Oathbringer. I figure Sanderson can keep me busy through most of 2019.

It's a great book. From what I've seen the reviews are pretty positive. I'm guessing the people who disliked it are Trump fans because Meacham pretty clearly is not one, but he does not openly bash Trump in the book. The book has a positive tone.

A Week in Winter by Maeve Binchy 10/10

Stories of the people that come together at a small Irish inn. Writing is wonderful and warm- feels like the kind of story your grandmother would tell you about her life

Just finished "The Lost City of the Monkey God" by Douglas Preston today (via Audible.) This was quite interesting; anyone sharing an odd intersection of interests in archaeology, jungle exploration, epidemiology, and parasitology should have a good time. Bill Mumy's narration was pleasant.

Next on deck: "All Systems Red" by fellow Aggie Martha Wells. (The first in her Murderbot Diaries series, and a winner of both the Hugo and Nebula in the novella category.)

Bloody Rose (Eames)- B - Follow up to Kings of the Wyld. Not as good but still a fun read.

Skyward (Sanderson) A- Sanderson delivers again. Great story.

Reading: 1984 (Orwell)- reread from high school in 90's.

Listening: Dark Tower 4

I got a couple hundred pages into that beast but decided that by reading 20 pages a night it was going to take me a decade to even get to the War.

I've been listening to it on audiobook and I spent about 1.5-2 hours in the car a day.

Question for y'all.

My wife and I use overdrive with a library card membership that is usually pretty good for getting ebooks/audiobooks. Is there any reason to go with an Audible membership for her vs. overdrive which is free?

Thinking about getting her that as a valentine's day gift.
