Really great little romantic comedy. It was kind of off my radar, and the plot seemed somewhat forced upon first watch of the trailer, but after I started seeing glowing Twitter reactions here and there, I finally decided to give it a shot and I'm glad I did. I wasn't aware that it was an Apatow Production either until the end credits. Pretty funny, and a unique story at that. Definitely check it out if/when it's playing in your city...

Rose Byrne does a great job on choosing scripts. When she is in something I usually watch.

I'm glad this is picking up some good reviews. I saw it last weekend and enjoyed it although wouldn't put it on the top of any lists. If you want a charming, palate cleanser with a decent soundtrack, then definitely check it out.

And not to be that person, but the book is significantly better and that I would HIGHLY recommend. Nick Hornby has an amazing ability to put senses and feelings into the written word that really bring characters to life, but somehow get lost in the film adaptations. He also wrote High Fidelity, About a Boy, Fever Pitch, A Long Way Down...all books I'd recommend, with hit-or-miss adaptations.

Honestly, I don't even know who we're talking about anymore. I assumed Hawke, since he's a liberal, but then Wycliffe mentioned a Netflix comedy special and I don't know who in the cast has had one of those as of late. Certainly not Hawke.

Are we talking Apatow? If so... really? Judd freaking Apatow is now on the conservative enemies list?

So Hollywood is forcing you to respond with your political leanings on a TexAgs entertainment message board discussing a romantic comedy? Got it.

Sure, there are certain threads on the Entertainment board where that's appropriate and expected. When warranted, I love getting into to Hollywood politics discussions as much the next guy. But NO ONE wants to read that sh*t in a thread like this. We're talking about an innocuous romantic comedy here. Why do you feel it necessary to pop in and ruin a discussion like that?

And sure, play the victim. Big bad ol' me is "shouting" the truth teller into submission. Give me a break.

Ummm I can almost gaurantee my comment gets removed and that I may even catch a ban. So yeah, shouted down, flagged down, whatever.

It was meant to be a PSA for anyone right of center who may want to know that this guy hates them for their beliefs...so may want to not give him money.

The producer. Apatow. Ethan Hawks doesn't go around injecting politics and hate into everything, as far as I know.
TCTTS

But don't YOU hate him for HIS beliefs? Otherwise why would you be here spouting all this crap?

Are you serious with this right now?

No I don't. I have always been a consumer of movies and music, knowing that both industries are overwhelmingly liberal.

But in recent years they've turned into self righteous condescending preachers who can't keep their mouths shut. Injecting politics as often as they can.

You could have just ignored my comment.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
And you could have just not commented. I love how I'm the bad guy in this scenario.

For all the b*tching about Hollywood preaching as of late, the b*tching about the b*tching has become even more annoying. The Entertainment board has become unbearable. No one can post anything anymore without people like you popping into every last thread with their political opinions, warning us of who we should and shouldn't listen to, who we should and shouldn't endorse, etc., simply because their political views don't align with yours.

Even a thread about a ******* romantic comedy has been reduced to this.

I seriously don't know how much more of this crap I can take. This board isn't even remotely fun even more.

Maybe Hollywood should "stand down" and quit treating half or more than half of their market like pieces of sh** every chance they get. A bunch is self righteous drama majors who think they're God's greatest gifts to mankind.

Your last sentence...EXACTLY how I feel about Hollywood. It used to be a fun escape from the BS.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
WE KNOW. EVERYONE KNOWS.

We're not debating whether or not Hollywood is full of itself. Of course it is.

I'm asking why you feel it necessary to pop into seemingly EVERY thread to let us know this fact. It's beyond tired. It's beyond annoying.

We were talking about a sweet, innocuous romantic comedy with not an inkling of politics to its DNA. One primarily set in England. And yet you feel it's your duty to let us all know that you disapprove of the producer's politics, none of which are anywhere near this film's plot, themes, or execution.

Judd Apatow's political leanings literally have NOTHING to do with Juliet, Naked.

Man I got really excited reopening this thread thinking there had been 17 posts discussing a charming movie based on a novel by my favorite author. But alas...

For those that care, Apatow seemed to have nothing creatively to do with this film. My guess is his producer credit comes mostly from one of his longtime collaborators directing the project. The film follows Hornby's novel VERY closely and is basically a British, indie rock version of You've Got Mail that digs a little deeper into relationships. That's it. Enjoy...or don't.

(Also +1 for TCTTS sticking around...really appreciate your insights & perspective.)

Can't believe TC was slacking and didn't include it being a Nick Hornby story in the OP.
jesus, I just read the rest of the **** on this thread. Can you jagoffs that don't actually want to discuss the movies/shows just go back to politics?

People are welcome to their opinions. You dont have to write narratives screaming them down every time. Ignore them and move on if you disagree.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
People are welcome to their opinions ON THE TOPIC. The topic being this movie.

It's just tough when so often I come to these forums wanting to talk about the entertainment topic that is named in the title, then it immediately gets derailed.

Anyone want to talk shark eyeballs as a featured museum attraction? Ethan Hawke's rendition of Waterloo Sunset? How FOUR people got screenwriting credit for an adapted work? How you would rate this compared to Hornby's other adaptations? I am 100% here for all these and related topics.

I also recognize that I'm putting my stake in the ground on a thread for a film that <5 Texagers will see once they realize there's no nudity involved

Cool, next time a thread has any side discussion or "FYI" commentary whatsoever, I'll be careful to help call posters out for not only discussing the substance of the movie itself. Gotta clean this board up.

Y'all realize that each and every person on here has done this right?

I was just trying to bring it to peoples' attention. While you don't care, a few others might. You guys could have just ignored it. Or maybe you're actually incapable.

TCTTS- To be fair, you brought up Apatow production in your OP. And he has been really over the top with his rhetoric lately. I would personally have refrained from mentioning his Co because of it.

Wycliff. Choose your battles wisely. You did ruin the thread based on a throwaway comment from OP.

I like coming here to read threads about entertainment. Plenty of opportunities to rail against Apatow over in 16.

so anyway,

I have enjoyed O'Dowd since The IT Crowd. Glad to see he is still getting roles.

Yeah same here. He plays such a great lovable oaf. If you like O'Dowd and romantic comedies, consider checking out The Incredible Jessica James on Netflix.

I intentionally avoid the politics forum for the childish bickering that I just read here. Keep that crap over.

Most of the time I really don't care what actors/directors/etc. think or say as long as they don't cram it down my throat during the entertainment process. I can easily separate myself from their beliefs during movies and shows.

I love having TCTTS on this board and don't want him to leave. Wycliffe's first comment on the matter seemed pretty innocuous (and even apolitical - I thought he meant Hawke's recent comments on superhero movies). It could have been ignored, but instead, the response seemed a little over the top, imo.

Wycliffe could have just commented on the movie.

But no, he had to derail the thread and make it about the politics of those invovled.

I admit that, in just this thread, without context, my response seems a bit over the top. But as I alluded to, Wycliffe does this all the time. He's one of a handful of posters here who, for some reason, feels it necessary to come to an entertainment message board and constantly bash Hollywood. It's like if I showed up on the football board, talked a bit of football here and there, but then in fun highlight threads and Liucci answer sessions, mostly went on and on about concussions, pointed out all the immoral things coaches and players do, talked about how we should boycott certain games, and basically just tried to make people feel like crap in general for following the sport. This was simply the latest post in a long line of posts that finally made me want to say something (yet again).
