Rewatching Indiana Jones with my son

I recently rewatched all three Indiana Jones movies with my nine year old son. All of them are on Amazon Prime right now. First time he had seen them. He absolutely loved them, and they are right in the wheelhouse for a young boy. My seven year old daughter wanted nothing to do with them. They mostly still stand up, but it was interesting watching them with the way the internet picks apart movies these days.

  • First off, my son doesn't really have context for what a Nazi is so when they showed up in Raiders he asked who these guys were and why they were so mean to Indiana Jones. I just went with that they are bad guys. Then they show up again in Last Crusade and when he sees the flag he says "There's that company again." I had to pause the movie and quickly explain it was a country that was evil and tried to take over Europe and did a lot of bad things. Then later in the movie they go to a book burning and he says "Hey look, those Nazis are having a cool bonfire party" I had to pause again and explain how terrible propaganda and book burning is. How do you explain fascism to a nine year old?

  • He did point out how many modes of transportation Indiana uses: horse, motorcycle, boat, camel, elephant, plane, tank, car, everything but a bike and a helicopter.

  • Man, the internet would have HATED Willie Scott and Short Round had that movie come out today. There would be some ugly Last Jedi style hate.

  • Everyone points to nuking the fridge as terrible, but he also used a inflatable boat as a parachute, survived the wrath of god by closing his eyes, and road on the top of a U-Boat for an unknown distance.

  • So many action sequence are so iconic and the just keep topping each other. The practical effects are still great. Amazing to see what they could do without CGI. However, the internet would have picked them apart these days. Indy vs the tank. At 2:27 a rock banana peels a cannon? At 3:25, none of the Nazis in the truck use their guns? At 6:07, why doesn't he just slip his left arm out of his satchel?

  • Why did the Sultan give the Nazis tanks, camels, and access to the grail in exchange for a Rolls-Royce? Doesn't seem like a fair trade.

  • Spielberg is a master. The close-ups, the use of shadow, the pacing are just a marvel. John Williams too.

  • I never realized how many times they use the Wilhelm scream or the ridiculous clap sound that every single one of Indiana's punches make.

  • How does Indiana Jones keep his day job?

I highly suggest you take an afternoon to introduce your kids to the classics. Next chance I get Jaws is up next.

I'm just as guilty as the rest of the internet in over analyzing things these days so it was interesting to rewatch these classic movies through that lens. Makes me realize modern movie deserve more of a break than they get.

As I recall 1984, Temple of Doom did get a healthy amount of criticism for being "overload" and pushing the believability factor completely out the window, even for Indiana Jones.

Anyway, I let my oldest boy start seeing them when he was around seven or eight and he absolutely loved them. He even went as Indy on Halloween two years in a row. It's was pretty awesome out trick or treating and other kids would ask who he is supposed to be then have absolutely no clue who Indiana Jones was.

I will be curious to hear if it holds up for your kid. I was terrified of the water for awhile thanks to Jaws.

I almost watched it with them the night before a swim meet, but thought it might be a bad idea.

fun fact, Temple of Doom is why there is a PG-13 rating. The movie was given a PG rating, even though it showed a still beating heart ripped from a guy's chest. There was uproar from parents, and Spielberg pushed for the creation of PG-13.

Getting fired from academia would be the most unrealistic thing in the whole trilogy.

Me too. It's objectively a great symbol. It could easily be more of a logo than a flag. I guess he just correlates logos like that to companies.

You can have a hell of a marathon with just Spielberg.

Indiana Jones
Jaws
ET
Jurassic Park
Back to the Future (Let's count this as Spielberg)

The thing that is most remarkable to me on rewatch is the "Storm Trooper Syndrome". It is amazing how often the bad guys miss Indy.

Do yourself a favor and grab his directorial debut, the TV movie Duel. It's pretty great.

I've done this with both of my kids. But I live in the reality that knows there are 4 Indiana Jones movies, regardless if anyone happens to like that fourth movie or not. Both my kids enjoyed the Crystal Skull movie for what it was; I put that one on essentially the same level as the Temple of Doom. Raiders and the Last Crusade are truly great movies.

Thanks, maybe I should follow my own advice of giving modern movies a break.

Recently have rewatched a bunch of SS movies to see if my 10yr old would enjoy. About the only thing that holds up are the scores.

Temple of Doom probably caused the most uproar but spring/summer of 84 had a number of PG rated movies that pushed the limits, leading to PG-13, and not just with violence and intensity but they were still showing partial (non genital) nudity in PG then. Off the top of my head:

Temple of Doom
Gremlins
Red Dawn
Conan the Destroyer
Romancing the Stone

Kind of strange to think that back then getting your hands on pron was hard, but PG movies had blood, tiddies, and intensity. Now young people can easily find pron online and PG movie are essentially movies for little kids.

You mentioned it multiple times, so I assume it is a legit thing. What does "intensity" mean with regard to the MPAA rating system? And is "intensity" it's own thing or is "violence and intensity" the measure?

Reminds me of skinemax movies ratings from 20 yrs ago.
