I remember the first time I borrowed that cd from an older relative and being shocked by how mellow and soft it was. Not sure what I was expecting, but I guess when I was middle school and high school, any kind of skull on the album cover meant something.

I thought their greatest hits album already had been the best selling of all time? This doesn't seem like news.

It was, and then Thriller overtook it after MJ died. I also think this is US only and Thriller is still #1 worldwide.

Am I the only one that doesn't consider a compilation album an actual album? I'm not a Michael Jackson fan, but "Thriller" wasn't an album of songs that were already hits.

Agreed. Unless it's a live album, it shouldn't count.

Some of their best songs aren't even on there.

If more people born after 1980 even knew their first album existed it would probably sell like crazy today.

That's how it is with all greatest hits albums. Always full of the overplayed and worn out radio hits. Deep cuts are where it's at.

Exactly. And yet it might as well be. Says a lot about Thriller.

Someone inform me about digital sales.

Last I saw apple sells songs individually. Do they sell digital albums? How do the sale of singles work? What are the metrics?

You can buy either the song or the album. For an artist you like, it's often cheaper to buy the album than individual songs.

I wonder if you buy all the songs individually, does that count as an album sale? What if they are bought over a long period of time?

Per the article linked above 1500 streams of a song or 10 downloads of a song equal 1 album sale.

Are they calculating all the Napster downloads too?

which is kind of jacked up.. some modern pop princess can have one huge song.. no one downloads the album, yet she can have millions of album sales because the song was downloaded tens of millions of times.

it's just not the same as it used to be.

This. A greatest hits album may be the biggest seller but it is inherently disqualified from being labeled one of the best albums of all time. Thriller is an important album, The Eagles greatest hits isn't important. Also, who keeps buying albums, are there people that don't have Spotify? The only band I listen to that I know isn't on Spotify is Tool, so there's a reason to buy Tool albums, there's no reason to buy an Eagles album.

Streaming is calculated into album sales.

I don't have Spotify. I already have 1000s of songs digitally, and I hate $10 / month charges plus data overage charges. I'd rather spend $120 / year on individual songs that I'll enjoy for free forever while growing my own collection.

I'm old school, baby. I buy mp3s, or whatever Apple uses for music. Get the **** off my lawn.

I pay for Spotify and although it's not as romantic as owning albums back in the day, I have access to almost any song. I listen to Spotify pretty much every day.

The problem is I don't like any of their loaded playlist because I'm older and don't care for much of the modern pop.

Does streaming count something like pandora or spotify streaming a song I didn't ask for? That happens all the damn time to me. I would skip the eagles every time, but since a song started, does that count as a stream?

I don't have spotify. Already pay for Amazon prime, and there's enough there to keep me happy.

I heard that it is calculated by time played. They take the total time played and divide by the song length to get the number of "spins" the song got. So if you only listen to 30 seconds then the 30 seconds is just added to the pool of time played.

You realize this is Greatest Hits Vol 1, which came out in 1976, right?

What Ag 11 said. It spent the longest amount of consecutive weeks on the chart. In fact, Billboard created a new chart called Catalog Albums because of DSOTM. They wanted the Top 200 to only be newer releases.

Wrong. There is no reason to buy a tool album.
