The most right answer is paths of glory.

The most wrong answer is american sniper.

Totally catchy song. I may or may not have used to hum the panzerlied as we drove our self propelled howitzer around Korea.

And when I find time to play world of tanks I will put it on an endless loop when I play with my Tiger II

More recent, I thought Dunkirk was pretty damn good and had a different level of suspense I dont think I've experienced with other movies.
I thought Dunkirk was boring AF. The cinematography was fantastic, but there just wasn't much of a story. It felt like a 30 minute short film that was dragged out for 2 hours.

I just watched Dunkirk while on a flight last week.

Yeah there wasn't much dialogue and character development, but I thought the story was certainly there. I actually feel like I got three stories from it and seeing how they all were interwoven and came together as one was fantastic.

I think everything has been mentioned about WWII and Vietnam.

How about Civil War?

Glory
Dances With Wolves (opening battle scene)
Cold Mountain
Outlaw Josey Wales

Or French and Indian War:

Last of the Mohicans

I don't really think of Josey Wales as a war movie per se.

Mine are all WWII movies because that's what I'm most interested in. Outside of Tom Clancy, most of my favorite books are about that war as well.

We Were Soldiers

Mostly because in the late 60's my dad was just out of A&M and a newlywed stationed at Fort Benning with my mom. Both just waiting for him to go to Vietnam. The scenes of the families and couples on base have always given me some glimpse into that experience.

I am asking about this one to see if anyone else has ever seen this. It was an Australian mini-series that was made in the early to mid 80 with Paul Hogan called ANZACs the War Down Under. It features Gallipoli and after that in the trenches. It wasn't a good production value show but it was extremely interesting and it is probably the reason I wish there were more WWI movies.

Lawrence of Arabia.

Some may consider it not a war movie because it's a biopic, but if Patton qualifies, this should, too. Phenomenal film.

And you know, a couple of the Lord of the Rings movies (The Two Towers, The Return of the King) do have some pretty phenomenal battles, if fantasy is included.
Thanks and gig'em

IMO Kubrick's best movie by far.

Most of those already mentioned are good to excellent, three that I believe deserve more love
Letters from Iwo Jima
Lawrence of Arabia
The Bridges of Toko-Ri (co-stars Grace Kelly)

Three I haven't seen mentioned yet
Gallipoli (An early Peter Weir film that co-stars a young Mel Gibson)
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
A Midnight Clear (A very solid adaptation of the William Wharton novel)

I hate this movie! I guess I should just let it go and enjoy all its cheesiness. Still I would love to see a film adaptation that is true to the Heinlein novel.

I just watched that a few weeks ago. I enjoy it. I hole the BoB epic about the 8th AF gets made by Hanks/Spielberg but don't think it ever will. The air war in Europe is so often overlooked but was worse than being a Marine in the Pacific in regards to casualties. Absolutely horrible

Blackhawk Down did a fantastic job of capturing modern urban warfare. Beyond that, Glory, Saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now, Last of the Mohicans, and Kelly's Heroes are all great.

And I know it's a documentary, but Wonder Woman is an insightful look into WWI.

I don't think of it as a war movie. It has a war scene, but after the opening battle, there really isn't any war in it.
