. . . but I'd still put them ahead of the bulk of this season.
I wouldn't. I concede that some of my view of the episodes I list is due to their juxtaposition with some of the best the show has produced but the only episode that I disliked from this season is the most recent. The others were enjoyable but had flaws. I also think my disappointment of much of this season and the last was due to the length of time we had to wait for them, considering such I think it was right to expect more but we mostly got OK with very little WOW and too much UGH.

Is River dead? I thought that was part of the fun of time travel, letting them bump into each other here and there.

Well, she is and she isn't. She is dead, but the Doctor "saved" her by uploading her "echo" to the library database at the end of Silence in the Library. That said, they can't really bring her back in real form because she made it clear that she had last seen the Doctor on Darillium (12th Doctor). But they could have cleverly brought her back for the latest episode since it involved the Solitract which was taking the form of lost loved ones. But instead....a frog.

I don't see any way they can actually bring back River without leaving a gaping plot hole, given that she said the last time she had seen the Doctor was as Capaldi. I wish they could because River was amazing.

Jodie appears to be committed for next season.

"I really can't wait to step back in and get to work again," Whittaker told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's such an incredible role. It's been an extraordinary journey so far and I'm not quite ready to hand it over yet."

I have trouble believing this season is ending already. There's no big arc to tie up.

I really like Jodie. I hope she sticks around for a few more seasons with better writing

I wouldn't expect any big changes if the ratings hold up. Not to repeat myself too much, but I've come to think the BBC was really going for a new show and new audience.

Yeah, I know the rumor is one more season for Chibnall, which I'd be good with. The down side is apparently Jodie Whittaker has indicated she may leave if Chibnall leaves. Could be baseless rumor though.

Not a bad season finale, but nothing crazy. Like what was said before, there wasn't an overarching story line. I was one to say that there was too much overarching theme in prior seasons and to have more 'monster of the week' episodes. But we just had a full season of 'monster of the weeks' and it was a pretty terrible season. I was wrong, we need a lot better writing, and at least something to look forward to. Even if it's a story line like she's looking for Gallifrey or something. At least something to keep us wondering.

I was not a fan of the finale. I'm not sure why they brought back Tim Shaw. If they were going to bring back any villain, why not the one from the Rosa Parks episode? It seemed as though that loose string was never tied and would have been a more logical choice. This is a great thread of tweets that really gets to my issues with the episode:

I also really hated that the Doctor was giving out weapons to her companions.

I just saw the finale and wow, maybe the worst episode of the season

And now the BBC has confirmed that the next series will not air until early 2020. Chibnall is the worst.

Seriously? That's ridiculous. That's how you eat away at a fanbase.

Back to rewatching old seasons I guess.

That will mean from Nov 9th, 2014 thru January ?, 2020 there have only been 34 episodes. That's 25 hours worth of content. And to be honest, not that good of content. Doctor Who was one of the hottest shows on the planet at the end of Smith's run, and ever since then it's been 25 hours of mediocre writing and acting (with a few bright spots). Completely destroying any type of momentum.

This is pretty spot on.

I almost wish this would be like the Sylvester McCoy era and just take the show off the air for a while. I hate the idea of adding horrible seasons to the canon. Then bring it back in 5-10 years.
