That there are so many covers, mostly good, of Africa is a testament to how great the song is. I've introduced my son to it and it is one of his favorites.

Love this thread.

The best cover of Africa is when Straight, No Chaser breaks into the song in the middle of Twelve Days of Christmas.

you win!!!!

not a cover but it is greatness.... i actually cannot listen to Africa by Toto any more without my mind envisioning this video. they both ruined and made it greatness at the same time.

so funny that they spent significant portions of a long Africa safari just filming these parts to make a video - their guides must have really been confused.

It's interesting, I've got a guy who grew up a missionary kid in Africa and he went to a boarding school in Kenya with a bunch of kids from all over the world. This song was like their school song. They all loved it. He can't hear the song without tearing up. It's like everybody over there knows this song.

We just gonna have an "Africa" thread every month now?

I liked Weezer's cover of Rosanna better.

With all due respect to Johnny Cash and Hurt, this is my favorite cover of all time.

Some of my favorite covers. I listen to a lot of acoustic stuff.

Ryan Adams - Wonderwall (Acoustic Version) - I actually kinda like this better than the original, and that one is really good.

Johnny Cash - Hurt - I actually thought NIN was covering a Johnny Cash song when I heard their version, but it's the other way around.

Not to derail but where in Ethiopia and what do you do? I work very closely with a NGO over there.

Actually, in retrospect, I think I have to say that I agree with Blindey when it comes to Buckley's "Hallelujah". I forget that's a cover. Sorry Jose.

The guitar solo at 2:50 on this one is nice.

Fun Fact; my Uncle played guitar for Toto while touring in the 90s.

He also played for Lee Greenwood hah.

Let's not forget this cover of Toto.

Mike just moved to Denver and my old guitar player joined his band! Totally jealous.

Great covers?

"Boys of Summer" (Eagles/Glen Frey) by The Ataris. Great original, even better cover.
"You got your hair pulled back, and those Wayfarers on, baby...."

"Mary Tyler Moore Show Theme" (Love is All Around) Cover by Joan Jett. Swear to God. It rocks.
"With each glance and every little movement you show it; love is all around, why don't you take it..."

And, of course, the greatest rock song ever is a cover, as noted...
"All Along the Watchtower" Dylan-->Hendrix
"Outside in the cold distance, a wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching, and the wind began to howl...."

Also, there is a great cover of the "Hawaii Five-0" theme...maybe The Ataris again?
That's just a outstanding song, period. Original or cover(s).

Greatest "Cover song" producer ever? Phil Spector (From the "Wall of Sound" to the walls in Solitary, oops)

I never really liked Toto. Elevator music (great vocals, yes).
However, as a horny teen, I very much liked the "Rosanna" MTV video.

Obviously, it was still a PG-13 world then...

This has been playing on Margaritaville radio. I love this song and think this is a great cover. Does not sound like Weezer.

The album entitled "The Teal Album," is pretty cool.

I grew up in the 80's. These covers are true to the originals!

Is this something people care about?

Good but they need to turn the guitar up. Weezer is the wall of guitar.

To quote myself from page1, it would be awesome if they did these covers but still sounded like weezer. I don't get the point to of remaking a song to sound exactly like the original.

In my opinion, weezer doesn't really have a distinct sound. They sounded like a ton of bands from the 90s. There recent covers sound like some 90s band covering songs. Hell, when I first heard africa, I had no idea it was them. It was until later I found out. That's how much they don't have a sound.

Someone like pantera, or muse, or TON, or AIC.. well the list is lengthy; these bands have very distinct sounds, and as soon as you hear a cover done by them, you know it's them.

Best cover ever. So good, in fact, and such a departure from the original that it's never discussed as a cover. Either that or the spousal abuse turns everybody off.

My favorite is this cover by Ninja Sex Party

I know the name is weird....they're usually a comedy music band but the lead singer also LOVES 80s music so they also do covers

Legal question:

Why do some artists sue others for stealing riffs and stuff, but are fine when somebody covers their entire song?

Do the cover guys have to get permission from the original first? Or is there some sort of legal exception?
