To me, what makes a cover a good cover is when you can tell who is covering it.

Thought the drums in the beginning were very Weezerish but I probably wouldn't have guessed who it was if I was going in blind.

Alien Ant Farm is certainly good.....but that Weezer.....blah.

I agree great covers really sound like the cover band and the best ones improve on the original or at least reach the same peak. But the best covers are so well known that people don't know the original artist.


The greatest Rock covers ever are:

A. Nirvana owning Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World" so much so that most people (especially those under 40) think it's a Nirvana track it even made their Greatest Hits package.



B. Of course there is also Hendrix electrifying Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower".



C. Of course most people don't even know one of the other greatest covers was a cover - Mannfred Mann's Earth Band remade Springsteens "Blinded by the Light" so uniquely and so well nobody knows Bruce wrote it and recorded it first on his first album. His version is great too but was never the hit MMEB had with it.

This is not bad either..... certainly not that well known but it is a superb cover...Foo Fighters doing Jerry Rafferty's Baker Street - which sounds so FF in the chorus but so GR in the intro and guitar solo. just a personal fave of mine.





I think 2 of the greatest covers ever outside of rock belong to Fugees/Lauryn Hill.

Fugees doing Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly" was nearly as big of a hit as the original and won a Grammy.


Lauryn Hill as a solo artist did a great version of Franki Valli/Four Seasons "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You"

These covers of Africa are very good.

But they don't come close to the genius that Toto had in this song.

Here is the story behind them covering the song if you haven't seen it. A 14 year old created a twitter account @WeezerAfrica and just kept sending tweets at them bugging them about covering the song and they actually did it.

Ha, I have listened to both version of Blinded by the Light many times and always wonder if it was a Springsteen or MMEB original. Learn something every day,.

I humbly submit this version by a killer Aussie band.

Put me in the camp of wanting a different take on a song. I'm old...but the punk covers from the 90s were awesome.

not a cover but it is greatness.... i actually cannot listen to Africa by Toto any more without my mind envisioning this video. they both ruined and made it greatness at the same time.

so funny that they spent significant portions of a long Africa safari just filming these parts to make a video - their guides must have really been confused.

Their Rosanna cover is much better imo. Africa, for all of it's wonderment, is a horribly difficult song to sing. Hell even Toto couldn't sing it well live most of the time. Rosanna isn't much easier but it suits Cuomo's voice much better.
