John Lennon, Beautiful Boy:

Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.

Jason Isbell, Cover Me Up:

So girl, leave your boots by the bed
We ain't leaving this room
Till someone needs medical help
Or the magnolias bloom

Sturgill Simpson, Living the Dream:

That old man upstairs, he wears a crooked smile
Staring down at the chaos he created
He said "son if you ain't having fun just wait a little while
Momma's gonna wash it all away
And she thinks Mercy's overrated"

I think the "Momma" that Sturgill is talking about is Mother Nature. Is that how you interpret?

I hate that this is sterotypical, but I love the lyrics to Stairway to Heaven, particularly:

Quote:

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
And it makes me wonder

Agree 100%. Mother nature/death comes for us all, without fail. Love, love, love that line.

Sturgill is incredible live. He can rip the guitar with the best of them.

From "I Never Said I was Deep" by Jarvis Cocker

I never said I was deep
But I am profoundly shallow.
My lack of knowledge is vast
And my horizons are narrow.
I never said I was big
I never said I was clever.
And if you're waiting to find
What's going on in my mind
You could be waiting forever.
Forever and ever.

I feel like this is just a long winded copy of Reckless Kelly "I still Do"

Seen him twice and couldn't disagree more. Love his music but he's boring live.

Well raise another round boys and have another glass
Be thankful for today knowing it will never last

Also like:
And if he can't drive with a broken back
At least he can polish the fenders

Down in a hole and they've put all the stones in their place
I've eaten the sun so my tongue has been burned of the taste
I have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth
I will speak no more of my feelings beneath

Quote:

You want to grow up to paint houses like me
A trailer in my yard till you're twenty three
You want to be old after forty two years
Keep dropping the hammer and grinding the gears

It reminds me of the conversations I had with my dad when I was in high school and during some summers during college. We weren't painting houses, though. We were insulating and hanging duct work in July in Texas.

Can't possibly think of favorite all time...so here are some I really like:

John Prine - Unwed Fathers
"From an teenage lover, to an unwed mother
Kept undercover, like some bad dream
While unwed fathers, they can't be bothered
They run like water, through a mountain stream"

Talking Heads - This Must Be the Place
"You got a face with a view"

Jason Isbell - Children of Children
" I was riding on my mother's hip
She was shorter than the corn
All the years I took from her
Just by being born."

Tyler Childers - Feathered Indians (currently really into this song)
"Well my buckle makes impressions
On the inside of her thigh
There are little feathered Indians
Where we tussled through the night
If I'd known she was religious
Then I wouldn't have came stoned
To the house of such an angel
Too f****d up to get back home"

One of my favorites is from Led Zeppelin's Living Loving Maid:

"When your conscience hits, you knock it back with pills."

Of course the greatness from Outshined:

"I'm looking California, but feeling Minnesota."

And from AIC's Nutshell:

"If I can't be my own, I'd feel better dead."

Bob Marley's Redemption Song:

"Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our mind."

I could go on for days on this topic.

and for anyone who is a son or a grandson or a father themselves, this one should resonate to the core

Quote:

One day I looked up and he's pushin' eighty
And there's brown tobacco stains all down his chin
To me he's one of the heroes of this country
So why's he all dressed up like them old men

I saw him last year and was kind of surprised when he decided to play for two hours like he was in a jam band. It was ok but not what I was expecting. I really wish I could have seen him when he was travelling with the orchestra in support of 'Sailor's Guide to Earth'.

Cheesy I admit, but it's been rattling around my head for some time now. Getting older sucks.

Not a line but a verse. Best cut-down ever in song:

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you

I've always liked Bob Seger's "wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then" in Against the Wind.
Brian Earl Spilner
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Oddly, I came here to be cliche and post Stairway also, but another lyric.

Quote:

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll
And she's buying the stairway to heaven

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Quote:

Time Stand Still -- RUSH

I let my past go too fast
No time to pause
If I could slow it all down
Like some captain,
Whose ship runs aground
I can wait until the tide
Comes around

Make each impression
A little bit stronger
Freeze this motion
A little bit longer
The innocence slips away

Summer's going fast
Nights growing colder
Children growing up
old friends growing older
Experience slips away

The only two things in life that make it worth livin'
Is guitars that tune good and firm feelin' women

Well ain't it strange how well I knew you back when I was seventeen
Lovin' you was easy babe but I was just a child
And these days you ain't nothin' just an interstate daydream
Folks were sleepin' and we were runnin' wild
