I didn't like it, but it goes without saying that my tastes in movies is exceeded by most 10 year olds.

I'm surprised by the amount of folks who are focused and more put off by the romance between the main actress and the creature. You would think that she is getting pounded by a horse or baboon by the folks on here.

It is a movie, and yes, is a romance between human and non-human. Everyone thought it was romantic that the alien and jake fell in love in Avatar, but this is bestiality and disgusting? They don't show any act of sex between the two, which is where most movies stop when depicting a romance between human and X. I'm not sure why everyone is in a tizzy over this.

The film that gave us duck tits gets a pass.

I think the big thing is that those beings looked like humans. The fish/monster/thing looks human in shape only. Everything else is different, right down to the private parts. The love scenes were wildly disturbing, and I couldn't help but wonder if reviews would've been positive if she'd had sex with a humanoid dog rather than a humanoid fish. Easily a bottom ten movie for me of 2017.

I'm starting to see more and more weird crap like the tweet below. I know I should just see the movie for myself, and multiple people have said of both the movie and the image below, "When you see it you'll understand," but I just can't comprehend the context that can allow so many people to actively root for and applaud the situation depicted in the image below.

To be clear, I can't stand it when people who are against gay rights say stupid sh*t like, "What's next, we allow a man and a horse to get married?" But as much as I hate that false equivalency and support gay rights... do those people, at least in their own minds, now kind of actually have more a leg to stand on? What am I missing here? Why are so many fans of this movie suddenly/casually rooting for a woman to hook up with that fish-monster-alien thing? Why is this becoming such a thing?

Part of me is with whoever essentially said earlier that as long as the desired creature is sentient and consenting, more power to whoever wants to **** it. But another part of me feels like we've all the sudden very quickly as a society decided that it's ok to start rooting for beastiality (if that's even what this is). And again, that creature thing may very well be far more intelligent/human than I'm giving the movie credit for, and there's definitely something else I could be missing, but on the surface this whole thing just comes across as kind of disturbing and weird as hell...

(said the guy who a couple posts earlier admitted he'd hook up with a mermaid and a robot)

I know this isn't fair and a huge generalization, but I was telling my wife about the comments on this thread and said, "only a bunch of Ags." She wasn't bugged by the movie at all, but we also didn't think it was an amazing movie without all of the hoopla. We both said 65-70%/100.

Watch it. I literally didn't think twice about any of what people are getting their panties in a wad over. In fact, I would say the explicit sex scene with the bad guy and his wife was more of a statement. He is forceful, cold, and borderline abusive...

That's because he's meant to be the most Trumpian character on the big screen this year. Somebody in my original thread said they'd wished they'd seen some evolution on his character's part, completely missing the point that he is supposed to be so vile that he's irredeemable.

That was me. Really thought there was going to be some good character development; but as you stated, I was left wanting with the shallowness of the characters. His character definitely had the most potential, but was completely wasted as a stereotype.

Hmmm. Finally saw this tonight and while I absolutely loved the first half (a top ten movie of the year at that point), the second half kind of lost steam for me. There needed to be more buildup to the breakout and less of the stuff after. It just kept going and going, and getting weirder and weirder toward the end. I loved the production design and I loved Sally Hawkins' and Michael Shannon's performances, but this one just didn't really do it for me overall. The creature sex didn't help either. I guess I don't have a problem with it in theory, but it just felt weird, forced, and unnecessary.

That said, the movie itself seems to be legitimately gaining steam as a potential Best Picture front-runner. I can't remember a field ever being this wide open this late in the game, especially one where a movie featuring a woman ****ing a fish (multiple times) has a real chance of winning it all.
