Would definitely recommend renting it. The visuals could win some awards.

Saw this on Friday. Movie had me on the edge of my seat but it didn't deliver for me and was just too abstract for my taste. Visuals are absolutely stunning for sure. Alex Garland is really talented and I'll definitely continue to look out for his work, but my expectations were to enjoy this movie as much as Ex Machina and it just didn't get close to that for me.

I loved this movie but its really clear that this is not a movie that people are really going to enjoy on a mass appeal basis. The trailers really sold it as a bit more of a scifi/action movie and its not that at all. Its just a pure scifi movie filed with lots of themes that I definitely didn't fully digest on one viewing.

I'm happy stuff like this gets made, though. It feels like the last few years have had some great stuff that is really good scifi and this is right in step with that. I don't know if I like it better than Ex Machina but it's not te same kind of movie. Ex Machina had lots of themes of technology and sexism/misogyny but it also had a very straight forward story. Annihiliation has a ton of symbolism but doesn't really have a direct protaganist/antagonist plot that will satisfy most people.

The last 20 minutes are super weird. I'll need to ponder this one for a few days to come to a decision. However, it's the first film I've seen in theaters since Fish Sex: The Movie, so I'll probably be more favorable towards it just because she doesn't have sex with a mutated alligator.

Man... this movie blew my mind.

I'm not gonna pretend to understand it, but damn did I like it. I'll be thinking about this one for a while.

It's weird, because although I wish it would had more defined plot/closure, I can't stop thinking about the movie to the point that I want to see it again soon (qualify this that I prob wouldn't see it twice in theaters without movie pass).

I definitely want to see it again in theaters. I went to the theater here in Bryan and I was underwhelmed by the AV presentation. I'm not sure why I ever bother going to Premiere as the Cinemark in CS is just about perfect each time I go.

Y'all's mixed responses are pissing me off.

Last week I was a hard pass.

Now I don't know what to do.

Was anyone else's sound in their theater jarringly loud? I know Drafthouse has ramped up the music before, but the last 20 minutes, it was like vibrating my body it was so damn loud. I could barely think and usually having it that loud irritates me, although in this instance it actually really worked. It was an effective part of the experience in that insane sequence and felt like how I should be experiencing it to coincide with the visuals.

Just curious if it was like that on purpose and for everyone, or if the Drafthouse just cranked it up to 11 for that scene.

The book is all kinds of weird. Hell, the characters dont even have names. Just "the biologist" or "the anthropologist", etc.

I read that this was intentional by the director

Figured that was the case... very effective decision by Garland.

Speaking of Alex Garland, he's officially on my "must watch" list from here on. No matter what it is, if he's involved, I'm there.

just got out of seeing it. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Still digesting, but gets a thumbs up from me.

i tend to really like movies that leave you guessing a little, and this one definitely took care of that.

just got back from this.

the ending was a little predictable from an outcome standpoint, but the getting there was a trip.

definitely worth the watch for visuals

was loud at the end even with only 7 people in the theater.

Gotta say I didn't notice any loudness, no more than the usual. I wonder it my theater didn't play it at full/intended volume.

So, I went last night...because of y'all. (Thumbs up to those of you with positive reviews)

I'm glad I did. I really liked it.

However, I did not like the ending. It was anticlimactic for me.

That's not so unusual though when you consider plots where the final reveal is less satisfying than the preceding story.

I'm guessing everyone picked up on this, but just to be sure... did you notice that Natalie Portman ended up with the same tattoo as the one girl who tied everyone up?

Was this because of the genetic mutation effect that the area possessed? Or was this a clue that Natalie Portman was actually an alien clone like Oscar Isaac?

IIRC the clone had the tattoo but the real one didnt during the fight.

Did we see Oscar Isaacs arm as the clone?

Tattoo was also on the dude's arm that was the subject of the first video they watched.

It was on the paramedics arm as well.

Saw it tonight. Movie made serious departures from the book, most of them very welcome imo.

One of the rare "movie is better than the book" films.

****ing trippy as hell.

Not sure quite what to make of the ending.

Definitely deserving of a movie theater stop for the visual/audio experience. Just would not be the same seeing it at home.

Put me in the Garland is "must see" category as well.

Saw this last night and liked it. I enjoyed Ex Machina more, but still enjoyed this movie. The score was great, visuals were great, and the bear was great.

Forget the talking skull bear, they cut a dude's stomach open and were like "here's this guy's guts crawling around"

Just saw it. Pretty much everything you could ask for from a sci fi perspective. Incredible visuals, strange technology/lifeforms, and leaves you wanting to discuss it. I'll say the element of horror was much stronger than I anticipated and was more effective because of that, I think. A great ride all around.

That said, there were some things, practically, that bothered me. It's been three years and they have absolutely no info about the inside of this area? It doesn't seem like there's anything keeping you from entering and then walking back out. And ok, so no radio signals can get out, but has anyone tried using cables to send signals back? They can't use a watch to tell them how much time is passing? And they have no communication system for talking amongst themselves while on the mission? That element was hard for me to ignore but I really enjoyed it if I put that in the back of my mind.

They mentioned that none of them remember anything from the time they entered the area until 3-4 days later (only really knowing how long they had been "out of it" by looking at the amount of rations eaten).

Yes but a watch with a day and date would easily tell them how long it had been without having to count rations.
