It's wild speculation that he tested the wall, that the children of the forest told him, etc. We are both engaged in speculation.bobinator said:
My argument isn't "wild speculation too," it's something that was literally said from a credible source in the show. How does he know? He probably tested it. You'd think Benjen Stark would want to get back south of the wall if he could. But he says he can't.
He also explains what happened to him. The Children of the Forest, who created the walkers, kept him from completely turning using dragonglass. Maybe the Children of the Forest also told him about the wall? They obviously have the ability to keep the dead out of the cave where the Three Eyed Raven is.
That's a big difference from what's plainly laid out in the story versus wild message board speculation.
Hafthor was born to play the mountain. Won World's Strongest man in 2018, and seems to be on track to do the same in 2019. 6'9", probably about 430 lbs. A real life mountain.Brian Earl Spilner said:

Yeah, I just read about Coldhands. According to GRRM, Coldhands is NOT Benjen. So HBO pulled that from their collective asses. The article doesn't mention anything about Coldhands saying that the dead are unable to cross the wall, was that in there? Or was that entire dialog made up by HBO (the article implies that much of it was)?bobinator said:
Okay, how he knows is wild speculation, but the fact is that he knows.
But HBO didn't invent this character. From what I understand he's kind of a combination of a couple of characters in the book (in the book the character 'Coldhands' is this role, and it's not clear who Coldhands was previously) but he plays an important role in the books also.
There is no doubt that what Benjen Stark said seems to contradict reality (in the show) since they indeed brought a wight south of the wall. So these are the possibilities as I see it:Urban Ag said:
Benjen Stark has been a brother of the Night's Watch his entire adult life and has been trapped north of the wall in an in between human/wight state for years. I think that would qualify him for SME level status. In fact, there is probably not one single character that knows more about the wall, the WW's, and what goes on beyond the wall in the entire GOT Universe, save maybe Mance Rayder (prior to his death).

Just read the quote below in an article. Does anyone think this is what happened? I thought Jon just lost it in the courtyard and decided to stand up, yell defiantly at the dragon, and wait for it to burn him alive.
Frankly, this makes more sense.Quote:
The latest theory to get tongues wagging is that Jon Snow actually did help to kill the night king. Just before Arya reached the Night King, Snow can be seen coming from behind his shelter to fight Viserion, the undead dragon. Apparently, he screams "Go!," allowing Arya to pass by and do her deed.

lmao it sure seems like a lot of yall hate watch this show
1) I didn't know this thread was solely dedicated to praise or prediction. I was under the impression that ALL things GoT related could be discussed. If people can engage in a discussion prompted by 'will we see bewbs again' I think it's fair to say that I can discuss my criticisms with an episode that aired 4 days ago without getting called miserable.
2) I don't hate this show. In fact I love it (I would hazard to guess that my affection for this show runs deeper, or at least as deep, as anyone else here). I've watched every episode multiple times. Read all the books multiple times. I'm invested in this story beyond a casual 60 minute viewing appointment on some Sundays. It's the fantasy epic of my lifetime. But to say you love something, doesn't immunize it from its own faults. Seasons 1-4 are generally considered by many (including me) as the best string of episodes in television history. The faults of this show have been slowly materializing in higher frequency and magnitude since S7. However, at this point, I've dedicated over a decade of my life to this story line and that type of investment is nearly impossible to sell off. There's almost nothing this show could do that would make me stop watching the last 3 episodes. The hooks are in me too deep (and I suspect it's the same for many others). Unlike The Walking Dead, it's far too late for anyone to bail out now.
So apologies if it appears I'm just 'hate watching' it. That couldn't be further from the truth.

And he had done it in the past, so it was consistent. I would have expected him to do that even if it was during the day. Especially when you are going against dragons. Before that storm, Jon and Dany were doing pretty damned good against the zombies. It probably would have been a close fight if it wasn't for that storm taking the dragons out of the mix.Zombie Jon Snow said:
Yes no doubt it added to the emotion... and for budget reasons made it easier.
But purely from a watcher point of view more light would have been better in several places. The Dothraki attack for one thing... they got off cheap there really and kill 100K without showing anything. then they roll in the clouds and obscured everything.
I get why - both cost and tension. Just saying it sucked that way for some of it.
You are insufferable on this thread with all the goal tending. You don't have to respond to every single criticism.
Most hockey games have 2 goal tenders
Just sayin....

The Dothraki charge is what they do. See earlier battle. They charge in and slaughter people. Flaming, dragon glass coated swords should work for awhile.

Wow swimming dragons. How on Earth did they not choose to go that route!?aTmAg said:So that is another thing that is inconsistent. If he can wake up a dead dude onthe other side of the wall when he's miles away, why couldn't he wake up a dragon on the bottom of a pond and have it swim it's own ass up? I don't think it's an inconsistency, at least not until later on when they're able to fly one over the wall.
I think this is the Night King testing the defenses. He knows they can't cross the wall, but he's seeing if he can reanimate a body on the other side of the wall (and maybe kill a bunch of the Night's Watch in the process).
I don't think it's a big jump to think that he had a WW relatively close by to raise them at night in the castle once they were through the wall.
So I think all of that was actually a decently well thought out plan.
Is there an species on Earth that cannot swim? I can't think of any.OldShadeOfBlue said:Wow swimming dragons. Are you sure you even like this show? The amount of times you've used the words "stupid" and "dumb" to describe it tell me you don't. It's fine to have opinions on things but why waste so much of your time on something you don't care for?aTmAg said:Hmmm... so the Benjen Stark thing seemed very stupid to me. Like how he magically showed up just in time to save Jon. So if I had to guess, the wall is just a physical barrier in the book and that the show added the ancient spell thing to justify Benjen staying north the whole damn time. Because otherwise it makes no sense.bobinator said:

Benjen Stark himself said "The Wall's not just ice and stone. Ancient spells were carved into its foundation. Strong magic. To protect men from what lies beyond. And while it stands, the dead cannot pass. I cannot pass."
Edit to note that this isn't from the book, it's from the show. Season 6, Episode 6.

I've watched it twice and definitely do not think that's what happened. Jon is trying to get to the courtyard, but he's blocked by the dragon. Him standing up is a last ditch effort to fight the dragon standing in his way. The Night King raised hundreds of dead to stand in his way. I'm more inclined to think he put the dragon there to block him as well.Trident 88 said:
