Watched this weekend for the first time. I enjoyed the movie but felt it was a bit of a let down. It was beautifully filmed, cast and acted but it didn't pass muster as a story.
I loved Scicario and HoHW. This movie let me down because it posed itself as a murder mystery. I tried to excuse the film after watching it by looking up what the story of the film was based on. Perhaps this is how it went down in real life so I can't complain, but it seems this was just a made up story based very loosely on the fact that Missing Native American Women are not a statistic that our government tracks and that many of them have ended up being found dead and raped.
That doesn't excuse the story then because if it's mostly made up then it should have been written better and made to me more riveting. Why make it just a plain Jane murder and revenge on top of telling the story of pain that goes along with these types of cases?
So feeling that I was placed in a murder mystery I expected twists and turns, a full journey of mystery up until a surprise reveal of who the real murderer was.
It started out great with Jeremy's character tracking down the clues, finding the dead boyfriend, finding more clues, but then it just gives up the entire mystery without making us even work for it.
It started out throwing our suspicions around, like with the drug users and the boyfriend, but then when you find out the boyfriend is dead and that points them to where he works, it starts fitting together a bit too easy. The guys at the drilling site show up bruised. Even easier. The little standoff where they square up then deescalate made me thing this is just too easy to be a simple case of them covering up the fact that they did it. I was waiting for some big twist and right when I was ready for more intrigue, bam, it goes and just shows us exactly what happened. It wasn't a confession. It wasn't deductive logic through detective work. It wasn't some final big mystery that is discovered, no, the movie just plays out exactly what happened. Then it's a shootout and its over.
On top of that the believability that all those guys would be ok with raping the girl is dubious enough but that they would also be quick to just beat their fellow worker to death over it just was too much.
I could buy the one degenerate guy raping her and as a means to cover it up because the coworkers want to protect their friend they accidentally kill the coworker in defense of their friend but that they all were ok with just standing there and raping her even if it meant knowing that her boyfriend would have to be killed to keep him quiet, nah.Still I recommend the movie as a entertaining and beautiful movie to watch, but just know, it could be way better.
