I predict that Oldman won't even be nominated. Churchill isn't particularly popular among liberals in Hollywood. Now if it was about Chamberlain, then that would be a different story.

There were some parts that could have been better, particularly the CGI aerial shots of the battlefields and the civilian flotilla.

Hard to believe that The Academy bent over backwards to give Leo a best actor, and nominates Clooney every time he portrays himself, but Oldman has only been nominated once and didn't win.
Denzel isn't either. He plays the same character in every movie.

I saw this yesterday and thought it was up with Dunkirk for my favorite movies of the year. Seeing the immense stress he was under to negotiate for peace almost had me in tears. They did a great job of showing that any other man on earth then would have cracked, he was the perfect man for the job.

I love Denzel, and he's a very good actor... but um, yes

Saw it this afternoon and thought it was excellent! I'm not a Churchill expert so I can't speak to how historically accurate the events and the man are portrayed, but it did make for a great movie and a nice complimentary work to my favorite film of the year, Dunkirk.
Lily James and Kristin Scott Thomas were both great but this is undoubtedly Gary Oldman's movie. They should seriously just go ahead and engrave his name on all of the awards now, that was the best performance I've seen all year. There's a five minute scene near the end that, while I doubt it actually happened, is just so powerful and moving that many people around me were sniffling afterwards. I had goosebumps and chills running down my spine when he ultimately delivers that most iconic speech to the House of Commons.
As an English period piece it's a prime example of Oscar-bait and I'm sure it'll get nominated for multiple awards. However, a commenter on a podcast I listened to yesterday had a great point: Lincoln was in many ways a very similar film and also heavily nominated but only won for production design and best actor. It wouldn't surprise me if Darkest Hour ultimately performs the same.
My theater was over 80% full and I was the youngest person in there by probably twenty years. I was also surprised as I was leaving to see at least 80 elderly people already in line for the next showing. Having been at The Last Jedi opening Thursday night I couldn't help but laugh at how different the target audiences for these two films are.
I haven't read any of the reviews but I'm surprised that the aggregator sites don't have it a little higher, it's currently sitting at 84% on RT and 75 on Metacritic. Definitely check it out when you get the chance.
