good deal if you like comics.

too bad so much of recent marvel has been utter crap.

that said if the whole "Time Runs Out" Avengers storyline is available, that is one DAMN GOOD READ.

Hickman is a boss.

I decided to go ahead with the free trial. Seems like only a subset of the overall available titles are part of unlimited. So, they have that storyline, but it costs extra to get it.

unfortunate, but not surprising.

I think Marvel's over version of this service let's you read anything except for the most recent 6 months.

The Time Runs Out Storyline criss-crosses between The Avengers and the New Avengers and goes on for about years.

Ties into a couple of the big events, but the main story drives through to the "end" of the Marvel Universe.

Really great story

Definitely right about it not being surprising... "unlimited" is pretty misleading. But with classes ending, I can probably binge on a few thing during the free month.

My daughter isn't into mainstream comics yet but she really likes graphic novels aimed at tweens (bone, all those Raina Telgemeir books, new baby sitter club etc)

She asked for a Kindle, but in some quick searching it seems like Kindle may not be best platform for these sort of books. But the comiXology App may be the way to go. She could use on ipad or surface? Or does it work well on a Kindle fire?

There are pros and cons for all of the devices you can use. The normal black and white kindle is great if your daughter is into manga or like the diary of a wimpy kid style books but not good for full size comics. Even the kindle fire 7 or 8 inch isn't great for full size comics, you really want a 10.1 inch screen for that. with a 10 inch screen comics are fantastic and its my preferred way of reading them now.

  • Overall I think iPad is the safest bet because there are apps for everything on it and they keep them up to date, however it is the most expensive option. You can get an iPad now for 299 for 32 gig which may be enough space but if you really fill it with comics you may want to opt for the 128 gig iPad.
  • Kindle Fire 10.1 is a good option in that its cheap now (149) and has expandable memory so you can get the 32 gig and pop in an SD card and not worry about space. Comixology is owned by amazon so the comixology apps are all supported and work well for the fire tablets. Also depending on how old your kid is the kindle fire tablets have a ton of parental controls you can put on them.
  • Android tablets are iffy. I've had a galaxy tab in the past and there are a lot of things i liked about it but even with a company like samsung they tend to abandon all updates on them after release. They don't really keep their value at all, and with the budget ones its hard to tell the quality of tablet you are getting.
  • The surface is not great for reading comics. It doesn't have a dedicated comixology app, you either have to use the webpage or the kindle app which are not idea for comics.

There are actually a lot of options when it comes to apps for reading comics.

  • Comixology is the itunes for comics, they have deals with everyone and they have the most comics. They have an "unlimited" service (10/month) but it is still not very good. They have marvel now but as noted it's a limited selection and more to get you started in a series rather than read the whole thing.
  • Marvel has it's own unlimited service which is much better call Marvel Unlimited. It has all comics more than 6 months old and adds new books every week. It has over 20k comics on it and costs 10/month or 70/year, its a great deal. Kindle fire does not have this app, however it is fairly easy to get the apk file from google play and sideload the app
  • Amazon also has something called prime reading which is included if you have prime and has a small selection of comics including marvel comics, worth checking out if you have prime since again its free.
  • Most libraries have digital comics via overdrive. It has an app you can get to read the comics from and you check them out using your library card.
  • Some libraries (Houston) have an app called hoopla which you can use your library card to access that has a ton of comics, no marvel but lots of DC and Image comics. You are limited to 8 check outs per month but there isn't a limit on how many books they can check out so you can read whatever you want.

I've been a long time subscriber of Marvel Unlimited (/Redstone) and it's really great if you want to get into comics. I feel like I heard that DC was going to or already has launched a similar service, which would be nice because there is a lot of older DC stuff I would really like to read.

I know it was an older post, but I want to echo SeattleAg's praise for Time Runs Out. It's probably my favorite Marvel story of the past 10 years at least.

I hadn't known about Marvel Unlimited. Worth thinking about. But there are a lot of negative reviews of the app itself, at least for iOS.

They might be old reviews, there have been some growing pains for the Marvel Unlimited app but last couple of years i've had little to no issues.

i was finally able to check this out on her existing ipad mini, and it looks pretty good!

does anyone have experience with how I should manage purchasing her books through Amazon? Should I just log-in on comixology through MY amazon account and buy amazon books on my account? It seems like there should be a way for her to have a separate log-in but still make approved purchases through my Amazon...but I haven't been able to figure it out.

After this thread in November, I discovered that my wife already had bought Marvel Unlimited. Now that I've been using it for more than a month, some thoughts:

The good
  • it's great to be able to read such a huge body of old issues. This overrides all of the drawbacks by a lot.
  • You can browse by series or look for characters, pub date, or by events. That last one is key for crossover events like Civil War etc.
The OK
  • viewing is a lot like Comixology with the tapping zoomed panels. Like Comixology, sometimes the cropping could be better. But then I just switch to full page view and pinch zoom myself.
The slightly annoying
  • Can't figure out a way to tag a series as a favorite, so sometimes I have to go scroll through a lot of titles
  • It makes mysterious choices for what to show as in progress. Often it will show something that is several issues behind where I am, and "mark as read" doesn't work well.
The worst thing
  • Missing issues. It varies a lot. I've been reading in the X-men stories and I'm up to the late 1980s. The main line is very complete so far, but there are big holes in X-factor, including the first appearance of Apocalypse, and a gap after the Mutant Massacre that leads to Angel becoming Archangel. Other titles seem to have similar gaps based on online reviews. IMO it would be better if they showed missing issues as not yet available, so you don't get jarring transitions when you read what you initially think is the next sequel.

Still, thumbs up overall.
