So on a scale of 1-10 how bad does "The Great Wall" look?

This actually goes beyond mere politics for me. I am looking at someone who I just simply do not like. Political opinions may come in to this, but it could also be something like who they are as a person. I cannot stand Sean Penn and could not see me ever having a beer with him. Someone like Clooney or Damon seem like nice enough guys that I simply think are wrong in their political beliefs.

This is completely understandable to me, and I'm right there with you in that regard. I totally get not wanting to see something out of a straight up dislike for whoever's involved with the movie. Especially if that person is a blatant/obvious assh*le. But yeah, when it comes to guys like Damon or Clooney, who are, by all accounts, genuinely good guys, I just don't get the hate simply because they have different politics.

It looks like a 1 but I will wait for the reviews. I can't help but think of The Last Samurai which I thought was going to be terrible but I thoroughly enjoyed that movie.

It's not that I'm offended by opinions.. it's that the people I am boycotting use their public avenue to spout ignorance.
"Ignorance" according to your opinion. You state it as if you're opinion is fact/right, and it very well could be, but you're being just as stubborn in believing what you believe as they are. And I'm not saying that in a way to disagree with you politically or anything like that. But "ignorance" can go both ways.

Quote:

They can't understand that their political pull was completely rejected by the majority of the country.. they have to speak down to us about how awful we are for electing someone they disagree with.
First of all, their "pull" was rejected by a majority of the electoral college, not a majority of the population. As to your second point, how are you not doing the exact same thing? You're speaking down to/ill of someone you feel is awful for endorsing someone/something you disagree with. No, you don't have the platform they do, but how are you not expressing literally the exact same sentiment, just on the other side of the fence?

9 edits has to be some kind of record!
Ha, I edit the sh*t out of nearly everything I post. Half the time it's simply to correct typos (which I do one at a time), and the other half are attempts to phrase something better. I'm kind of a freak when it comes to stuff like that. My least favorite feature on the "new" TexAgs is, hands down, the edit count. How on earth is that even a feature?

Same. And for some reason TA's new quoting formatting doesn't like me to chop quotes up and only feature part of a post at times. Then a day later it will. I'll constantly post and see the worst looking post and have to immediately clean up formatting, then I save 3 times and realize all my typos.

As for the movie, it looks like a steaming pile of garbage. Good for them if they make their money back. I'll pass.

A amazingly, it has already done 203mm in China against a budget of 150 million.
Even if it just does 200mm in the rest of the world they are likely to break even on it. Becoming a new hollow wood paradigm - -make China happy and you have a large security deposit on your investment.

Wasn't this kind of the case already with Pacific Rim?
Unrelated to the topic, mostly, but I predict this Wall movie will be nowhere near as good as Pacific Rim.
so, really, pretty damn bad, then.

What I meant by that was that if all of the other elements of the movie make it seem pretty amazing, I'll usually set aside my dislike of the star (Damon, in this case). The Martian, for instance, there were other actors and amazing looking production that made me want to see it. A dozen other actors could have pulled off that role and it would have been as good or better. But if it's a movie almost entirely relying on star power, and the star is a ****** (like Damon), I'm out. It's not really a boycott because my aim isn't to hurt them financially, it's just that I find it harder to suspend my disbelief and love a character played by a person that has made it so clear in real life is a complete ******* to you if you don't think the exact same thing they do. I know that the vast majority of actors are far left, and I really don't care, it's just that a few like Damon have really gone out of their way to be ***** about it.

I have to be honest - and maybe I'm just in a bubble or something - but I have NEVER come across this kind of reaction to Damon before. I had no idea it even existed. I mean sure, he's obviously friends with Clooney, and I know they've teamed up on some political stuff before that may rub ultra conservatives the wrong way, but this is so out of left field (no pun intended). I honestly didn't know people existed that have this much HATE for him. Again, he's always come across as one of the nicest, most humble guys in Hollywood, who never took himself too seriously (on Kimmel and the like). This just seems so weird to me.

I've always thought there was a reason Matt and Trey made fun of him in Team America.

And yeah, he does come across that way when it comes to politics - at least to middle Americans. I say this as a guy that has no issues watching him or Clooney or any other actor for that matter.

I love movies, I see a ton of them and read a lot of reviews and analysis to further my understanding and appreciation of them. In the course of doing this, the only place I can ever remember coming across anything about an actor's personal views like you describe is TexAgs. Admittedly, I'm not on Facebook or Twitter and don't have a cable tv subscription, but perhaps you'd be a lot happier just avoiding whatever medium you're getting all of these celebrity viewpoints from that are so distressing to you so that you'd be able to enjoy more of their work

Damon does come off as pretty smug and self important (very similar to Clooney), but I don't have a problem with him. No I don't really agree with his politics but I will say this, at least the guy is passionate and seems to really care, unlike a lot of the Hollywood elite who seem to only be doing it because they're just supposed to.

For instance, I could be wrong, but Leo seems like he's absolutely full of **** to me. Whereas I think Damon is genuine in his concerns and charity work... He does do a lot of good, and I've heard that he is a pretty solid guy.

He comes off as more informed than most (again, not agreeing... but I can respect anyone's opinion if they actually seem to care and back it up). In fact, he was extremely critical of Obama not too long ago, even saying that he didn't have any balls. Now how many liberals in Hollywood would have the courage to say that?

I remember rolling my eyes at that stupid Promised Land movie as it definitely seemed like propaganda... I am pretty shocked to find out that it was actually financed by the United Arab Emirates... that's a joke.

I'm far from the only person who cares what stars are like in their personal lives, especially stars who go out of their way to make sure their opinions on politics are known. This is an opinion thing, not a right or wrong thing. If you think Matt Damon is cool, good for you, go enjoy The Great Wall. If you think Matt Damon is a ****** and it makes you like his movies less, whatever. I'm just glad a lot of actors prefer not to constantly talk out of their ass.

Is there really a difference between boycotting actors who suck and actors you disagree with?

I know a few of you refuse to watch movies with Marion Cotillard, and I doubt it's because she's a French socialist.

I refuse to watch movies with Jamie Foxx, he's 100% garbage, and anyone who was in mama Mia. Not because of politics, but how awful that movie was.

Wait....so anything with Streep, Firth, or Skaarsgard (sp) is off limits to you now because they were in an Abba themed musical?

Yeah, I'm not sure why he's getting at. I remember that doing very well with critics and movie goers and was one of the launching pads for Wahlberg into movie leads.

I just find it so much easier to judge actors by their individual acting performances irregardless of any outside factors. In one of the examples that you gave, I thought Jaime Foxx was excellent in Django Unchained, Collateral, and Ray. I thought he could have been better in White House Down, Horrible Bosses and Annie but that may just be because I didn't enjoy those movies that much. Adding in all of these other externalities to make such absolute statements about somebody and their work just seems unnecessarily complicated to me, but to each his own.

Mother****er Jones may be the greatest role of his career.

I don't really follow or care about celebrity political opinions, and for all I know, he may be "BSC", but the dude does a crap load of charity work. Way more than the average celebrity. To me, that's more important than his stances on climate change, immigration and what presidential candidate he backs. He's a movie star and his job is to entertain me. If he does, that's awesome. Saying that, this movie on a scale of 1-10, looks like about a 2 only because the visuals look kind of cool. Unless it surprises with really good reviews, I have no desire to see this.

You should read up on the reason he's portrayed that way in the movie. It's almost funnier than why you think.
