Jimmy Page took an obscure song from the man who co wrote Be a Pepper for Dr. Pepper and turned it into one of the greatest rock concert centerpieces of all time. That's not Linda Ronstadt singing a Desperado Eagles cover. It's genius. Along with all the Willie Davis stuff too. Genre creating genius. This album consistently rates top 50 all time, debut or not. Pretty good for a cover band.

I get your point. But these aren't covers. They took dead songs the general populous never heard of and created a heavy metal sound that literally 100s of bands owe their very existence too. That's a hell of a debut in my book.

Dazed and confused shouldn't be considered original for Led Zeppelin when Page did it with the Yardbirds first.

Did it on stage. Led Zeppelin was the new Yardbirds.

Yardbirds did it on stage too. And no, LZ was not the new Yardbirds.

that's what I meant.. The Yardbirds never recorded it, they did it on stage. Holmes opened for the YB in NYC and Page saw it.

(You probably knew this, but i threw you off with the lower case "new". my apologizes )

The 4 guys who would become LZ first were called the New Yardbirds for a period in 1968 to fulfill concerts booked for the Yardbirds.

From the LZ offical website:
Quote:

Page wanted to honour all the pre-booked gigs so he saw it as an opportunity to introduce his new band which was made up of drummer John Bonham, bassist John Paul Jones, Page on guitar and singer Robert Plant

Initially going under the name the New Yardbirds, the hundreds of gig-goers who squeezed into the Mayfair that night were unaware that history was in the making.

They may have been called the New Yardbirds, but they were still an entirely different band. Otherwise, LZ 1 shouldn't be considered a debut.

Dazed & Confused was written by Jake Holmes. The Yardbirds covered it from him.

the New Yardbirds never put out an album, so regardless of the band name zepp 1 is a debut of that lineup.

If those 4 guys released something prior to zepp 1 it would be different.

I agree, which is why Zep shouldn't be considered just another version of The Yardbirds or New Yardbirds. They have about as much to do with them as Audioslave does to Soundgarden.

Well hold on, the new yeardbirds is the same 4 dudes as zeppelin isn't it? that's different than audioslave / SG.

Jimi did it with watchtower. It's still a Dylan song, so Jimi can't get full credit for it's greatness.

And as said, page did dazed before zeppelin with a different band altogether.

We're arguing different things. I'm saying they were only the New Yardbirds in name only, not a continuation of the original Yardbirds band.

Ha Ha.

I'd be here all day if I replied to all the post that get me hopped up here.

I didn't even get to vote, but it wouldn't have made a difference anyway.

I really like the mention of the Celebration Day movie/CD, though Zep just adding For Your Life absolutely made it for me.

On another note, JP said while doing his promotion of the Zep stuff in '15 his goal for 2016 was to "be seen playing live", in some capacity. Really disappointing that did not come to fruition and seemingly no plans to do so.

All Robert Plant apparently. He's content doing marginally interesting collaborations while denying the huge mass of Zep followers one last tour.

Would have preferred it 10 years ago. That was the prime opportunity after Celebration Day show.

But I'd take it now of course. Can you imagine how big that tour would be. If only...::

It would have been a stretch to afforded it 10 years ago though.

No no no. I'm talking about JP meaning he may do some sort of solo shows, with a singer. Maybe not. Even talked about spending time in the studio.

I know. I was just spitballing about something else. Just the fantasy scenario. I didn't reply to yours.

I just wanted to add, I never knew until now that these 'spaceships' are actually guitars on fire.
