N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton
REM - Murmur
Pink Floyd - Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico
Patti Smith - Horses
The Stooges - The Stooges
The Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy (this one is tough to beat as best ever)
New York Dolls - New York Dolls
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Suicide - Suicide

I have a soft spot for New York music from the mid- to late seventies so that's why there's three from that era and location on my top 10.

Yeah, I don't know how this would work if your debut album is like your 5th best.

Huge Elvis fan here but Elvis Presley suffers from the practice/strategy of not including his singles on most of his albums(all the way until the mid-70's), so "Elvis Presley", though still amazing with a great cover, had few hits.

Imagine:

That's All Right
Blue Moon of Kentucky
Good Rockin' Tonight
I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine
Milkcow Blues Boogie

You're A Heartbreaker
Baby Let's Play House
I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone
I Forgot To Remember To Forget
Mystery Train

Good topic, I'll hang up and listen.

With Sympathy was awesome. If I had thought if it I would have added it to my list.

On a lighter side...

Even though I don't like the woman, Alanis Moresette comes to mind.

Also, Pearl Jam.

But Jagged Little Pill wasn't her debut, it was like her third album.

Many already posted, I agree.

Chicago's debut album was awesome and hasn't yet been mentioned. Great songs, new sound.

Boston's first release gets my vote. Excellent, innovative.

And The Band's still stands out for me.

And, I think, Creedence Clearwater Revival's and Buddy Holly's deserve mention also.
Gig 'em, FAST FRED, '65.

Not sure how Counting Crows "August and Everything After" has not been mentioned. That is a fantastic debut album.

also, regarding the OP, not sure I agree with categorizing bands like Arctic Monkeys with Madonna and Lady Gaga.

Arctic Monkeys later stuff is certainly edgier/darker perhaps...more like Killers/Arcade Fire/Strokes even a little....but that first album was more pop with an Indie vibe at best imho.

Anyway no offense intended it was more the Brit part that landed them there. And Portishead for example more electronica but I wasn't making so many categories...just kinda broad pop or rock and I'm pretty much a purist more guitar oriented for rock, more synthesizer oriented is pop.

Don't worry about categories - that wasn't the point - just breaking up an otherwise loooong list.

I bought this album after falling in love with "land of rape and honey". I thought someone had switched CDs out of their cases

oh, sick burn bro.

i happen to enjoy a wide variety of music. In the early 90s, i was wearing out Counting Crows right alongside AiC, Rage, STP, Tool, etc.

maybe it is the ear wax or the beard overflowing into your ears.

also, i'd love to know what you consider musical genius and why.

furthermore, i'd like to know why you only consider "musical genius" to be good music or worthy of acclaim.
