EDIT - NOMINATIONS ARE CLOSED........

Time for the Vote.

This is the FIRST ROUND - you may vote for between 1 and 12 albums in this round.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BG3JMVW

Entries are alphabetical by band name - if you can't find it look for "The" preceding the band name. I've included all legit nominated bands/albums that were actual debut albums.

Voting will remain open for approx. 4 days - concluding Friday sometime.

The Top 12 from this voting round will make the semifinals - In the semifinals you can then vote for your top 4.
The top 4 will make the finals - in the finals you can vote for 1.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This got jump started a while ago for me on another debate thread...and then the Rock HOF thread just bumped me over to decide to publish the list......after a brief discussion about whether Boston's was the greatest debut album ever....

Perhaps we need a vote.

So Give me your TOP 10 debut albums (even if not on this list)......then we can have a VOTE OFF.

This is by no means necessarily complete....feel free to nominate anyone you think I missed.

I used many sources including some Rolling Stone lists, other internet online lists, etc....I tried to be pretty inclusive and also touch several genres. Admittedly I am not the biggest rap/hip hop person and country isn't my thing nor was it included in any of the lists I saw really.....

But for Rock - many sub genres, Punk, Hip Hop/Rap, Folk, and Pop I think this covers quite a few of the best.

My top 10 - debuts that I think dramatically changed the music landscape. Where that sound had not been heard before and can be attributed to so much that came after it. In release order:

birth of rock-n-roll
Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley

british pop invasion
The Beatles - Please Please Me recorded 10 of the 14 songs in a 12 hour period

blues based hard rock defined
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin

psych rock, acid rock, R&B, guitar virtuoso
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced

arena rock
Boston - Boston

punk - was born before this (Stooges), but first really big one (along with Ramones but I like this one better)
The Clash - The Clash

blues guitar is reborn
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood

alternative was born
R.E.M. - Murmur

hard rock returns - killing hair bands
Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction

gangster rap
N.W.A - Straight Outta Compton

grunge (better debut album than Nirvana sorry although maybe not as much influence overall but i gotta include it)
Pearl Jam - Ten

Nevermind was not their debut though.

Bleach in 1989.

which is why Ten is the better debut album.
Nevermind is certainly the more highly acclaimed album - I guess.

Your right. Brain fart, though I like Ten more than Nevermind.

Boston

Every song on the first album got radio airplay. Can't get much better than that.

Van Halen and Zepplin close seconds.

A great debut album from a hair band was Tesla's first one. Some really good tunes on that one.

That's some good work there! (though I give the nod to The Ramones, that was the real first punk album)

I would add.... Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath : Heavy metal is born.

Although he was featured in a lot of Dre's albums, Snoop's Doggystyle was a huge. It seemed like every teenager in the 90s had that CD!

I'd add

Stone Temple Pilots -- Core (for rock nominees list)
and
Matchbox 20 -- Yourself or Someone Like You (for pop nominee list)

Each of these helped dominate 90s airwaves.

As a high school kid in the late 90's, it was a good thing.

Now, I tend to agree with you.

Appetite is always my answer to this discussion. But another one I liked a lot was Collective Soul's debut album with the song "Shine" among other great songs.

Mildly interesting fact: Collective Soul had the most spins in alternative radio in the 00s.

Section.80 was Kendrick's first studio album, not GKMC.

My list would include:

Weezer - Blue
Smashing Pumpkins - Gish
The Postal Service - Give Up
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Nas - Illmatic
Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill
Franz Ferdinand - ST
NIN - Pretty Hate Machine
The Strokes - This Is It
Bon Iver - For Emma

And I don't know if it's a debut if there's only one, but Jeff Buckley's Grace is pretty incredible.

I had Jeff Buckley listed and I agree.

As for Kendrick Lamar. Section 80 was electronic download only not released as an actual album whatever that means. I don't know if that matters. Times have changed for sure. But that seems to be why Rolling Stone listed GKMC and not section 80. Thats a nitpick by them.

Another rap entry: Eminem - The Slim Shady LP

And for best track 1 of a debut album, DMX "Intro" off It's Dark and He'll is Hot
