Ok I've created the playlist. Here it is:

TexAgs' Greatest Songs Ever

Lots of Led. Didn't add any of the classical submissions or some of the random ones that didn't get at least one blue star.

While I get that the title to this thread said subjective, I think we can objectively call this answer terrible. America is great and all, but our national anthem is not a strength.

Spend an hour and a half at the Johnny Cash museum in Nasvhille. Watch the last exhibit of the "Hurt" video.

May not be the best song ever, but for a moment, I could fell the pain of his life coming though the words and the performance. I'll never forget that moment.

This is a song that probably should have come up sooner in this thread.

Nice! Thanks for doing that.

There are times that listening to Hurt goes somewhere deep into my soul that I can't explain.

There are less than 5 songs that I can say that about, but the other 4 were all specific to me and times in my life. Hurt seems to have been that way since the first time I heard it.

A Day in the Life by The Beatles. To me, this is the ultimate collaborative piece between Lennon and McCartney.

While not the best, and this may sound crazy, I think I have a new personal favorite song -- High Road by John Fulbright.

It also isn't even wholly original, the melody is based off a popular English society song.

What if it is played by Jimi?

Been jamming to a lot of Fulbright lately. He is depressing sometimes, but man is he good.

I know it probably shouldn't be included in such a distinguished list, but I keep coming back to the only song I wish I knew how to play, whose opening riff is instantly recognizable, just seems so representative of its time and genre, and is accessible for many listeners.

"Night Moves," Bob Seger.

Op asks for only 1 song and you list 7.

And none are close to the greatest ever...objectively speaking.

But hey, at least he wasn't Redstone who acknowledged there are more than one, then wrote 500 words without naming one.

Somebody to Love is fantastic. But Bo Rhap is their greatest work....even Freddie acknowledged as much. It might be the greatest song ever written. Some of these other songs...yeesh (sorry). They really think they are in this category???? Marley's "3 Birds" (great song, BTW) You think that he thought that was his greatest work??? What he wanted to be remembered for? I mean, I have 2 young teenagers, who I don't think have ever been with me, where I put this song "on" more than once or twice, where I actually "made them listen" But man, the couple of times I've seen them when they hear this song wherever they do,on their own....Wow. They get excited, just like teenagers 30 years ago. It F'n transcends. THAT's what I think a truley great song does. It reaches EVERYONE. Hell, my Mom even appreciates and likes Bo Rhap.

I'm going to get blasted for this. Ugh.

BTW, this was not my "best song", but I obviously have no issue with anyone that did. It's a Top 10, minimum.

Love to see list from the biggest bands of the last 30 years.....Guns, Metallica, Foos, U2.....anyone want to bet where Bo Rap would fall as "best" or "most influential"?

I'm done..

For me, the greatest song has to lie somewhere between a rock song and a ballad or country song. Something like Red Barchetta is high on my list but just a tad too much as an forever song.Alternatively, Bob Marley might be a little too slow. Something in between is the final answer.

Based on that, my final answer is Where the Streets Have Know Name by U2.

Master of Puppets....

But, if going with non-metal, I'd have to say Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

"Simple Man" is great -- but "Tuesday's Gone" is better.

And how has "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay" not been mentioned yet? Otis Redding is awesome.

Not sure if a song with lyrics that Vedder himself doesn't know can be considered the greatest song ever, but it's definitely an awesome song.

Probably not at the top of the discussion for greatest song ever but as I was listening to the playlist y'all posted, I wanted this song to be included in the playlist.
