Hard to tell how many people are serious on this thread. I'm guessing around 75%. Actually higher than I thought for a TexAg thread like this.
No Beatles, Zep or Stones so far, not sure what to make of that.
I could change this answer daily....I heard an interview with Paul Simon the other day and they played a snippet of Bridge Over Troubled Water....wow! Right there with God Only Knows. What a song, and I'm a hard rock guy.
That being said, Kashmir is the greatest song. Has J.P. said as much before?? (His favorite Zep song?) Can't remember.
BTW, some of these "Greatest Songs", IMO, should have no other song come close to sounding like them.....Kashmir, Bo Rhap, Bridge,....those fall in that category. Rock You Like a Hurricane does not.

I've always been annoyed that Dylan refused to release some absolute gems, such as Abandoned Love.

Let me throw one other curve ball into the mix:
Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen.
It's ironic that the song went nowhere when it was released, and now has been covered something like 300 times. The beauty of the song is that it is open to such wide interpretation, it means something different to everyone who hears it, and they are all valid. Everyone can find a resonating theme in it. The other thing about it is that there are a bunch of versions because Cohen wrote something like 50 verses and would perform different ones from time to time, so it's almost like a living thing. And depending on which one you hear it might even speak to you differently. Regardless it's wonderfully written and another timeless song.

You might be joking, but from a pure songwriting perspective, this was one of the first songs that came to mind.
That move from the verse to chorus where it goes from A minor to Amajor, and then modulates throughout the chorus back to A minor, it's a great move.
