It was a microsecond of "political gay crap".

I talked about this with my wife last night after seeing the movie.

Fantastic by the way.

But 1) making lefou gay was obvious for about 2/3 of the movie.
2) he got progressively more gay throughout the movie
3) I felt it was unnecessary. Didn't necessarily detract from the film, but I felt it wasn't needed

Other than his little wink, I didn't think he was that much different than the animated movie.

I'll also say that I was completely unaware going in to the movie about this whole ordeal. So I was caught a little off guard.

But. It was not a major plot point or distracting. Just struck me as obvious. I had never considered the character as gay previously

Half the jokes were the gay undertones but he acted just like he did from 1991.

Disney hit another homerun.

Great movie. Great remake. Made for a great date night and... well the rest is between me and the lady.

Le Fou's whole character in the cartoon is a fawning sidekick to Gaston. He sings a song about how handsome and amazing Gaston is - once you make it live action there's NO way it won't come off a little gay. Kids likely won't even pick up on it and who cares if they do? They're going to laugh at his lines and pratfalls and enjoy the movie, just as they do in the cartoon.

What I loved in the live action was his turn against Gaston and realization that he wasn't a good guy. That was actually a nice bit of character development and acting by Gad.

Gaston was a much meaner villain in this than the cartoon - tying up Maurice and leaving him to die was...rough.

This. It was more than a "microsecond" of it. Practically every scene Lefou was in, the whole point was to reenforce how gay he is. Will a kid notice? Probably not, or not too much. Is there a point to including this in the film? Not really.

It's one component of his character in a village full of characters. Like belle is a bookworm, Gaston is vain, the bookseller is black, the silly girls fawn over Gaston, the baker flirts with a woman who isn't his wife, etc. WHO CARES?

He also realizes his friend is a d*ck as the movie progresses. For your kids to see him bullied by Gaston and not stand up for the truth about what happened to Maurice is a better thing to talk about afterwards than that he's gay.

This! Making this change made Le Fous character even better. He even sounded like his version in the original. Was a great change!

I didn't really care for the new songs though. Thought they were more of a distraction, especially when The Beast did his song.

I was surprised to see how they made Gaston a tad different, but again it fit the story better I felt (if you remember what happened next after the Gaston circle jerk song this alteration makes a little more sense).

Agree. Gaston was mostly a ridiculous blowhard in the cartoon until the end. There was real menace in this, which made him a better villain.

They did cut my favorite line though:
Gaston: Le Fou I'm afraid I've been thinking
LeFou: a dangerous prospect
Gaston: I know

In the cartoon I always assumed the curse would keep them all alive as animated objects if the petals fell, not turn them into the objects themselves. That actually raised the stakes quite a bit, especially with mrs Potts and Chip.

I loved that the village and castle had characters of all colors. That opening scene in the village was so bustling and fun - just a great musical number.

As per the film, it was actually a lot of fun.

It's tough to top the original as one of the better animated films Disney has done in the modern era, but the overall design of the film was beautiful. I liked how they showed a bit more darkness in Gaston and Lefou saw it, and as a whole the animation was solid. Bits of Beast seemed a bit off but that's to be expected with CG characters.

Also as mentioned, the controversial moment was the tiniest thing as well as humorous the way it was set up (if you were paying attention).

Really? 2 guys dancing for 3 seconds?

i also noticed that the only nice, sensical townsfolk were black. the white people were all kinda rude to Belle (and she was a wainch back TBH.)

there was a lot of interracial relationships, which is ridiculous for that time in france.

on neither of those do i GAS, but that stood out. loved the movie. not no homo.

My 12 year old after the movie ends, "That's so stupid. Too many black people in the movie."

Of course, I knew exactly what he meant.

I think he inherited my filter.

So he didn't have a problem with a spell that turned men into clocks and candles, women into dressers, but his problem was that there were black people in a all white France?

I had to teach him about suspension of disbelief.

I haven't read any of this thread so I'm sure this has been mentioned, but I thought the animation of the beast was so bad it was laughable at worst and distracting at best. Such a wide range of quality with the animation, as the talking furniture and stuff was incredible, but man,the beast was terrible IMO.

Other than that, I liked it. Thumbs up.

Ok, now that I've read the thread and see that's it's all about this supposed gay issue, I have my face right in my palm. I literally didn't even notice any gayness in the movie. At all. I had to be told afterwards that there was a big controversy over a 2 second clip that wasn't even overt. As I told my wife, all French people seem kinda gay anyway. So a goofy, slightly effiminate French guy is supposed to have us outraged? Please. I didn't see a single scene that was even mildly questionable in the gay side, and I'm a fairly conservative Christian. People need to lighten up.

i'm an incredibly conservative christian that DOES think we're getting stuff shoved down our throats and this movie was a big fat nothing burger in that regard.

instead of *****ing, use it as a controlled opportunity to talk to your kids about these things. this is about as light an introduction as one can have to the conversation with children, especially that you can be in charge of. if they're not world aware, they'll move on thinking nothing of it. if not, you can have a talk. or just don't go to the movie.

my kids are 10 and 7. they've had the gay and transgender talk. they've had the race talk. they know we treat people kindly and with love no matter what. we can disagree with lifestyle choices and still love people well.

conversation over and my kids don't think twice about it.
