Seriously?

This is a Disney princess movie. The animated version was the first movie my now-10-yr-old daughter saw and she has loved it ever since. So of course she is very much anticipating this live action version, and I am seeing that Disney is pandering to the homosexuals by highlighting a relatively minor character as being gay, and I am likely going to have to explain that crap to my daughter, and I am just to 'get over it?"

Edit to add - my point is, this movie has a built-in audience. It is guaranteed to rake in millions of dollars in ticket sales. Why f*** with this movie by adding this unnecessary garbage? If Disney wants to make a movie about gays, that's fine. Just make a different movie.

I hate to break it to you, but it's only going to get "worse" from here. You making it a big deal is the only thing that makes it a big deal.

She does, actually, but only in conceptual terms.

I know that I could treat this movie like I do one of the TV series, what is it, Modern Family, that features gays in prominent roles, and simply not see it. I really just don't think I should have to go to that extreme, or even go screen it by myself before taking my daughter because it is a DISNEY PRINCESS movie. This crap really pisses me off, actually.

No, I am not making it a big deal. It is being forced on the viewing public by a gigantic corporation. This has shown up all day in various media, facebook, etc. Those are the ones making a big deal about it by going out of their way to say, hey, look, we made Lafou a gay character and isn't that just ******* great!

I wouldn't freak out. The media and people freaked out over Star Trek Beyond, and that was much ado about nothing.

Disney, like all big corporations, is just basking in the attention as usual.

More gay crap? Seriously Disney? WTF.

I have never really had a thought watching the original that the character in question is gay. What I saw was more like the pathetic weakling sucking up to the star jock type - every school likely has some kid like this - not some flamer wanting to get in Gaston's pants.
Every school likely has some kid like this....and some of them are confused about their sexuality during this time. Sorry to break this to you.

As long as it's not overt and awkward, then they are just taking the character from the original cartoon and pushing that weird fascination with another man a little bit farther.

Why does your daughter knowing about gay people piss you off?

I mean, I could understand being upset if one character (male or female) was blowing another. But just acknowledging that gay people exist doesn't seem like something that should upset you. Unless you don't believe in gay people.

The character was IMO not gay in the animated movie, so there is no need to make him gay in the live action movie, which as is well known, is a Princess movie. Princesses are marketed to girls from a very early age. This does not seem appropriate for the movie.

I don't discount the existence of gay people, gee, where did you get that from what I've said?

What is not appropriate about a man liking another man? The whole movie celebrates bestiality.

You're not breaking anything to me. Some <> all. My interpretation of the original character was exactly what I typed, not that he was gay. Others may have interpreted it differently. Now they are just coming out and saying he is gay. No room for interpretation there.

I would certainly hope it's not overt. I mean, it's not like it's a Disney princess movie or anything. Or maybe it's Disney's take on The Crying Game. Belle can drop her dress and reveal something completely unexpected? Oh wait, that's the wrong letter of the alphabet soup thing...

That's just the only reason I could think of for you not wanting your daughter to know they exist.

I guess you'll just have to roll the gay talk right in with the bestiality talk.

That is actually hilarious.

"I don't wan't want my daughter asking questions about why two men love each other!!!"

"Daddy, why did the girl fall in love with the big talking wolf?"

"Great question, sweetheart! Well, when a woman and an animal love each other very much..."

I thought about the argument earlier when it was bouncing around politics, but then I thought it just kind of walks into the retort... "If the movie presents being gay as a curse, I have no problem with it." So yea...

Except one of those is a clear fairy tale. Referring to the other one as a fairy tale to your kid will get you accused of child abuse these days.

I am talking purely Disney....not their other properties like Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, etc.

As of now, their two highest grossing movies are PotC: Dead Man's Chest and Frozen. This will easily top both.

Recently had to do that with my son. We were picking out a wedding card for a lesbian wedding we were going to. He picked up one that had "For the Bride and Groom" on it. I told him that this was two girls getting married and we had to find a card with no men on it. His response was "Oh, OK. How about this one?"

True progress is when a minority or disenfranchised group can be represented as the bad guy in a movie. Think how long it took Marvel to cast a black guy or woman as a villain.... wait... have they even done that yet?

It's a part of society. I really look forward to a time where alternate sexuality preferences, etc, is so commonplace in movies we don't even think about it.

I look forward to the time where people realize they are just f'n movies and get over themselves.

See Great Wall as a perfect example. People are crying foul because a Chinese company made a Chinese film, but had a white guy play a european soldier so its obvious racism and whitewashing.

Try explaining to your kids stockholm syndrome. That is ultimately what is wrong with this movie. Keep a young girl hostage until she has no choice but to fall in love with you.

I was 100% convinced this movie would become Disney's all-time highest grossing film because of timing. Original came out in '91 and captivated every female that was 4-12 years old. Those girls are now 30 to 38 years old and many of them now have children that are 4-12 years old. Parents love to share their nostalgia with their kids. EVERY SINGLE girl I know in the 30-38 age group is going ape-s over this movie and preparing for opening night. Jungle Book was a great remake, but didn't benefit from parental nostalgia like Beauty and the Beast.

But now with the gay scene added, I wonder if the target demographic that has kids will think twice about taking their kids to see this movie. The kids may be a little young to be getting exposed to gay story lines, and I'm curious why they chose a Disney Princess movie for it. Seems like it'd be more appropriate in a Pirates movie or one that draws a slightly older crowd. Gays and their supporters wouldn't have skipped this movie without a gay scene, but some parents will skip this movie because of it. Seems like a failure on Disney's part of knowing their target audience. But maybe I'm wrong. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Captivated every female that was 4-12 years old, and their moms. My wife is more in the 50+ age group and dying to see it. Every damn time the commercial comes on, she says "I really want to go see that".

FTR, when I mentioned to her this big flap over La Fou being gay, she said "He is. Everyone already knows that."
