For some reason I thought this movie had come out already

Sort of like Alexandra Daddario in the Percy Jackson series?

This director didn't want to cast a woman/girl that is bigger or as big as the male lead though.

I'm so-so on the two leads, but honestly pretty stoked for this overall...

Your comment and thinking of both Leon and Fifth Element had me look up Luc Besson's track record, and it's a pretty good one when it comes to the leads. Of note:

Leon (Natalie Portman, Jean Reno)
Fifth Element (Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich)
Lucy (Scarlett Johansson)

Some of each of those actor's best work IMO, especially in action oriented films. Hoping he can coax the same out of the two leads for this flick, but I have the same reservations as you.

Yeah, I hear you. Save for Lucy, which I though was hot trash, those other two are all timers. Problem is, they're both over 20 years old. But hopefully Besson can find the magic again, and the fact that this is literally his dream job - one he's been prepping for his whole life - makes me think he can.

As for the two leads, I actually really like Dane DeHaan in general, I just don't know if I buy him as a hot shot space cop or whatever. Cara Delevigne is... ok - I don't really have anything against her - I just feel like there are a dozen or so better actresses in that age range who could have played the part. Will of course give both of them a shot, though.

For Lucy, yes the movie was pretty dumb, but I was just pointing out that ScarJo's performance was great in it (at least in my opinion, and based on memory since I haven't seen it but once when it came out to home release).

I'm a bit more concerned that if a movie isn't Marvel, Star Wars, or Star Trek (in other words: an established brand), audiences haven't really shown an appetite for new space opera. But, then again there haven't really been good ones (thanks a lot Jupiter Ascending).

Mentioning Jupiter Ascending should get you banned. What a horrible blechfest.

I hope this movie is great. Love me some good space opera.

Sounds like it's a winner for the most part. Given the expectations (or lack there of), along with how easily it could have slipped into Jupiter Ascending territory, I think this is about as good as we could have hoped for. Some clunky dialogue, unengaging leads, and a serviceable story apparently, but some of the best action and effects in some time - with reactions ranging from best movie of the year to "Eh, pretty good" at worst. I'll take it...

I like the nice homage to Tranzor Z style body armor.

I'll be honest, I'm very surprised to be hearing good things about this movie.

Still, I get the feeling it's going to bomb, no?

I absolutely expect it to

The only thing it has going for it is Besson, but he's not an automatic home run by any stretch

Yeah I expect it to bomb (regardless of how good it is), too.

It's going up against Dunkirk. However there isn't much of a strong contender the following week. Atomic Blonde's the only real one of note coming out the next week, but I could be wrong since the Projection List 2.0 isn't live yet dammit. So, in theory it could have legs if there's strong word of mouth.

It won't do well here because the average moviegoer doesn't seem to want to support new sci-fi movies that don't have a bankable lead to draw them in. It is truly unfortunate.

hopeully it goes the way of Edge of Tomorrow and spreads word of mouth...

This gives me so much hope. Desperately hoping for a Fifth Element repeat performance. Just watched that movie again the other day. It holds up really well which is impressive considering the sci-fi material.

Fifth element is one of my "stop flipping through the channels and watch" movies. I'd love something on that level.

They had the opening scene in real 3D @ my Spider-Man show last night and it looked really good. I'll probably go so it as a new IP in movies (relative to Star Wars, Marvel, etc) and it seems like something that will really benefit from the theater setting.

Great opening scenes with lots of interesting aliens set to Major Tom song.

I was pleasantly surprised that they didn't include the footage before the regular-D spiderman. I want to watch the movie when I watch the movie, not parts of it before I watch another movie.

I went to the Real3d cinemark xd version of homecoming and we didn't get the scene. Just the normal movie trailer.
