The brilliant label is thrown around way too much.

Agreed. Brilliant people don't mix two totally opposite drugs together to get high.

He did alot before the age of 33 in terms of the world of comedy. He was world famous by the age of 30 as a comedian.

I'm pretty sure he wrote alot of SNL stuff.

I think because of his early death he probably does get the genius label thrown on him pretty loosly. But up to that point he was a trail blazer at a young age. I think I would label him as one of the most talented comedians of his generation.

Although he is really weird. The person I might label as a comedic genius is Dan Akroyd. The man wrote Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters, Spies Like Us, Dragnet, etc. Outside of Dragnet I think he actually conceived those stories and characters, etc. He's kind of a weirdo, but he's pretty underrated imho.

If you have not seen "Neighbors", I definitely recommend it.

Continental Divide was on TV recently. Watched it for the first time in over 20 years.

The documentary about National Lampoon (Drunk, Stoned, Brilliant) goes into the early formation of the original cast of SNL. That was all before my time, so it helped me understand the cultural impact that Nat'l Lampoon and SNL had in popularizing a new wave of comedy aimed at adults.

In a time when there were only 3 TV stations and people still read magazines and listened to the radio, he and the other cast members were pretty big deals across a couple mediums.

I don't think a 33 year old comedian could achieve that level of fame today.

Kevin Hart is pretty much there.
