Cool, if they deliver that well, it could be great. Reading the story, it was apparent that her daughter came after the arrival, but this change or way of doing the memories is much more dramatic. Despite all the changes, I'm still pretty excited about this movie. Of course, you'd have to botch an alien contact movie pretty bad for me not to like it.

Figured TCTTS would appreciate this given his love of a certain franchise.

The first reviews are in (after a premiere at the Venice Film Festival last night) and critics are RAVING about it. Not going to link to any because they all hint at spoilers for some idiotic reason, but rest assured it sounds like we've got a classic on our hands.

that goes along with the screener reviews I've seen...woohoo!

The Verge posted a very positive review that doesn't give away any significant details: http://www.theverge.com/2016/9/10/12870314/arrival-review-amy-adams-denis-villeneuve-tiff-2016

Of course, you should avoid it if you're overly sensitive to anything remotely spoiler-y. The reviewer calls it a "sci-fi instant classic" and "one of the best films of the year".

Does anyone know if the short story is still available online? TC's link in the OP no longer works, and I haven't been able to find it anywhere else.

You still seeing it tonight? Would love to hear thoughts afterward if so...

Yeah, it's very good... Beautifully shot and crafted as to be expected from Villenueve.

Dunno if I'd call it a classic but I'm also exhausted from last night and today, so let me sleep on it and try and post some more on it tomorrow. Need to read the short story too.

Can also say that after seeing it and reading Aggie Journalists post on the first page, I have no idea what he's saying.

Awesome. Great to hear.

Ha, and good to know it doesn't get as muddled as I feared it might after AJ's post.

Thanks for the quick hitter.

Saw it last night. Very good! Went in knowing nothing of the script or even that it was a short story. Saw one preview a couple months back I think and avoided everything from there.

Question for someone who has seen it:

What was the line right after the theory about lightning strikes? Something about 1980?

Saw it Wednesday evening. As a long time fan of the story I admit that I came away with mixed emotions about the movie, which strays significantly from the source material including just about the entire third act. For what it's worth my wife who hadn't at the time read the story liked it much, much more than I did.

I'll most likely see it again to see if my perception of the movie changes with time, and I understand that I'll be in the minority, but I thought it was no better than just "ok."

Flame away.

Jeremy Renner was hypothesizing why the ships landed where they did and said, "the only other thing these 12 locations have in common is that they each had a #1 hit on their charts from Sheena Easton in 1980... in other words, we just don't know." ...Just kind of a joking way of saying there's no rhyme or reason to it that we can figure out

Am I suppose to have more questions after the movie ended? Is there suppose to be a follow up? I felt like I could have been more satisfied if they explained the aliens a little more.

That reminds me.

I totally missed the line where Forrest Whitaker tells Amy Adams' what the other linguist answered in regard to the Sanskrit word for war, as the sound fx were too loud. Someone mind paraphrasing?

.

I think it was supposed to be left a little mysterious. For example:

1. We never found out what was killing Abbott
2. We don't know what the crisis 3000 years in the future was about
3. We don't have any clue what exactly Amy Adams said to change General Shaing's mind
4. We don't know exactly why Adams was able to begin time shifting they way the aliens did - it seemed to have to do with her touching the glass and receiving their "ink" more directly - but to me just like in Contact, or Interstellar, or a number of other movies there's always a point where they cease to use rational science to explain things and it becomes "magic" to get you over the hump into the realm of the unexplainable.

I definitely liked it. It doesn't fall in my top 10 sci fi movies ever but it's probably my favorite since Interstellar.

1) Maybe i misinterpreted this part but i thought they were saying that Abbott was about to bring death upon humanity, and Louise getting the Chinese to stand down is what saved humanity.
3) I think she just had to know something that no one except for him, or someone he'd told in the future, could possibly know. That was how she convinced him that she knew the future.
4) I think she was seeing visions before she ever touched the glass. I think she had the "weapon" (aka the ability to exist outside of time) from the beginning and the language is what helped her harness that ability.

Well I think the exact words were "Abbot is going through death process" - which I took as "Abbott is dying." And Amy Adams responded with "I'm sorry." Yours is also an interesting theory though.

Jeremy Renner answered number 4.

He made a comment about learning language allowing someone to rewire their brain. The heptapod language rewired her brain in the process.

I thought Abbott was killed by the bomb. Costello ran away right before but Abbott stayed close to write on the glass or at least that's how I took it.

The line the aliens tell the Russians is really cool. They say "there is no time" but everyone took it as a threat instead of how the aliens view time, non linear.

I enjoyed the movie a lot. That director might be the best in the business currently. All his films are great.
