I've never tried either weed or acid, but it's easy to see how they would have made this movie more tolerable. We saw it when it was brand new, before it gained cult status. The theater (the Windsor on Richmond Avenue in Houston) had reserved seating for this, the only time I've ever done that for a movie. All over the auditorium you could hear people snoring. BUT, as I said, the ending was great, and it had awesome music.

The pacing is part of what makes it great.

It is pretentious, but it lives up to it.

I just watched this and hated it, and I'm not surprised since it's the exact opposite of my favorite movie of all time, 12 Angry Men.

It was basically a 25 minute short with 2.5 hours of visual & musical filler thrown in. The visual effects and music...as previously stated in this thread...were truly stunning and ground-breaking...but those things are irrelevant to me when it comes to making a movie "good."

I don't care about visual effects, and I don't care about sound. I care about the story and more importantly characterization. The story wasn't bad. Man's struggle to survive against the homicidal, all-powerful AI controlling the ship along with the mystery of the black monoliths planted by some kind of intelligent being on the various planets & moons that trigger intelligence within the native lifeforms. But there was only 25 minutes of this story told in a 3-hour movie.

A previous poster suggested that I allow myself to get drawn in by it. Closer to the end when Bowman was the only one left and HAL was talking to him, I could almost feel the tension and terror he was going through...almost It would've been better if I had gotten to know Bowman's backstory leading up to his mission a little more. It would've helped me relate to him and empathize with him in a way that I would've been more likely to see myself going through what he was going through instead of just watching some guy who I don't really care about go through it.

An excellent movie...and an excellent story in general...makes me feel like I'm going through it myslef, not watching others go through it. And I think it came up short here.

It's no Dune.

If it plays locally I'll probably go see it again. Fifty years is a long time. Lots of things have changed and evolved, especially me.

Just imagine watching this thrilling 2 1/2 minute sequence.................in 70MM!!!!

Or the one where they eat their rectangular mushy food for 5 minutes while watching the news from home... ugh.

it is actually very relevant today with the proliferation of AI.

It will be even more relevant when we have to "kill" the AI that we have created.

This movie also altered fashion, furniture and future science fiction.

That is a really good trailer. Really hoping they show it somewhere close enough to me; I'd love to see this movie on the big screen.

I actually read that one of the only reasons it made money when it was released was because people would go to drop acid and watch the stargate scene.

Another interesting quote I saw from Clarke was basically if you understood 2001 completely then they didn't achieve their goal.

Brilliant film that lives up to the hype.
