Just got out of the theater. Loved it. It was all about the characters, most of which were fascinating.

Spoilers below:

Finn was great, Niles was hilarious, tons of other great personalities on the team too. There's really no big plot, just an endless string of parties and team bonding moments, which was fine with me. Maybe not as good as Dazed and Comfused, just because Dazed had a number of different plot threads weaving in and out, and this one did not have that, nor did it have different PoV characters like Dazed. But Jake was still a good protagonist.

I love that they incorporated the story of the UT football player who was 30-something, had played for like 10 years at JuCos, before he got busted. I don't know if there was a similar story with college baseball, but it seemed like the exact same situation to me.

And yeah, I loved the reveal with Willoughby. That was such a perfect layer to add, having someone that wistful, not able to let go of his college years. It put the whole movie, along with that particular time in those guys' lives, in perspective in just the right way.

I went to the "premiere" in Huntsville on Thursday night with my parents and the rest of the SHSU team that this movie was based on. We were on Linklater's VIP list, so I got to meet the man himself and the other ball players that I had not previously met, including the actual Coma and Plummer. It was fascinating to talk to these guys and watch the movie with them, since their reactions to many parts of the movie garnered "remember that time..." comments to each other.

In my post-viewing conversations with my parents and the guys, I was able to determine that the following things actually happened or were very close to reality.

****SPOILER ALERT****

1) Coma, Plummer, and Dale actually existed.
2) Coma got his nickname by passing out at a party, resulting in one of the guys saying, "I think he's in a coma." At the premiere, the real Coma's name tag said, "Coma."
3) McReynolds was based on one of the very talented teammates who was later drafted in the first round.
4) Willoughby, the 30-year old teammate, was actually on the team and everyone suspected that he was actually much older than he led on. His real name was not Willoughby.
5) Jay, the insane pitcher, was based on a guy who joined the team from Chicago. According to the actual teammates, this was the most accurately-depicted character in the movie. The guy was certifiably crazy and is now in a mental institution. His real name was not Jay.
6) The conversation between the coach and the players in the house at the beginning of the movie actually occurred and the coach did laid down the rules of no drinking in the house and no girls upstairs. They broke these rules immediately and often.
7) The team did frequent the Sound Machine bar in Huntsville, which has since gone out-of-business.
8) The competition within the house, specifically the pool match between Jake and McReynolds, really happened and "McReynolds" became extremely pissed when he lost.
9) The "talent scout" on the ladder over the right field wall was created by the more senior players to fool the younger guys into thinking that they were being watched by the MLB. The name of the scout in the movie was the same name that they made up in real life. They would point to some random person painting or cutting grass and say, "he's here."
10) Two of the players, including Linklater, dated Theatre majors and regularly attended the wild costume parties that were hosted by the theatre nerds.
11) You may have noticed a lot of Lone Star beer in the movie. One of the players was a student sales rep for Lone Star and supplied the team with beer.
12) When preparing to go out on the town, several of the players would pull their pants up to accentuate their rears, and would proclaim that they had "the best cheese on campus."
13) In one very brief scene the team is seen intently watching and commenting on a soap opera. I can't remember if it was "The Young and the Restless" or "All My Children," but they guys would gather around everyday around lunch and watch the show. None of them were embarrassed by this.
14) The house in the movie was very close to the real thing and there were chairs on the roof so the guys could tan.

That was kinda wordy, I know, but I found it interesting. That's all I can remember right now, but I'll post more if I think of them.

That's pretty awesome info.

Was it a pool game in real life? Because it was ping pong in the movie.

Couple of corrections to my post above:

It was a ping pong game in real life between "Jake" and "McReynolds."

Jay was the crazy pitcher's actual name.

The soap opera that they loved to watch was "All My Children."

Awesome movie. I don't know if it was as quotable as Dazed and Confused, but just an awesome movie.

*****Not really a spoiler, but in case you want to go in blind*****

My favorite part of the movie was all of them riding in the car just singing together. It really made me miss college, and doing that with all of my closest friends. The whole movie was like that, but that was the epitome of one of the things that, after you leave college, simply doesn't happen that much anymore. Just you and your best friends riding around, doing absolutely nothing but acting stupid.

Saw it this weekend at Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar. I thought the movie was very funny. I messed up and read a review about how ******y and brotastic the movie was which kind of put a damper on the movie.

I would love to see a 90s movie from Linklater. Not sure what the plot would be, where it would take place, but I'm sure I would love it.
All of Linklater's "period" pieces tend to be shown from the perspective of his age when the movie is set. So it would probably be a reunion of old high school friends. You have the one guy who moved far away and is just starting to make something out of himself, and you have all the friends that stuck around town doing the things their parents were doing when they were kids. And it is all captured over a single weekend as they reminisce, get drunk off Zima and Bud Ice, fight, and talk about their families and futures.

I think Zima was late eighties.

saw it in Chicago a few nights ago. like most of Linklater's films, its not about the flashiness or the end result that people enjoy. It's about the characters and the flow of the movie. It doesn't hurt to have been to a few places in the movie as well. Many parallels to Dazed and Confused, naturally. It's Linklaters experiences.

-----------------Spoilers-----------------

my favorite scene was Finn and his girl tubing down the Guadeloupe around 5:30 - 6 in the morning. Talking about the meaning of life in true linklater form. Pure innocence.During the scene you see the sun comming up and peaking through the trees onto the river. awesome.

can anyone remember what the teacher wrote on the board at the end of the movie? "Find your own Frontier"?

Just sawing last night. The professor writes "Frontiers are where you find them"
Such a fun movie, and I like that it is very authentic, everything from what was said, music, outfits, the parties, all seemed legit. Not over blown like most coming of age movies. The party scenes were great and I love the team comradery and learning lessons about being on a team. Raw Dogs first practice domes to mind

It finally hit some of the major theaters in Houston this weekend. Hopefully it will gain some traction.

Spoilers: (not really the right word. There is nothing to spoil, but there are some great scenes to remember.)

1. I loved the "Find Your Own Frontier" at the end of the movie. I was sad that the movie, i.e. weekend, was over, and then I was sad that that particular time of my life was LONG over, then I realized what Linklater was saying. There are still adventures to be had, no matter how old you are, as long as you look for them. I'm inspired.

2. I loved the Nerf Basketball game. Looked like a game of street ball 2 on 2, but with a nerf hoop.

3. The music at the beginning of so many scenes can't be under emphasized. Without it, this would look more like some scenes from a random 80s nostalgia movie. The music made it feel more like a documentary about real people.

4. The movie brought back many fantastic memories from my own college years at A&M.

5. I've decided to homeschool my daughter for college.

6. I really appreciate the poster above giving us the inside scoop on the stuff with his dad and the premier in Huntsville.

Saw it last night and thought it was a lot of fun. Plummer, the catcher, was hilarious. We were dying when he goes "Who's this f***?" when the professor walks in.

Saw it last night. I thought Plummer had the funniest moments as well. Movie was fun, wish it had a little bit of a plot but is till enjoyed it.

Spoiler: I cracked up seeing how high Plummer was when they were smoking in the room and then he made the "having a tail" comment.

Only about a year late, but I finally got a chance to sit down and watch this movie (damn kids), and it may be my favorite thing I've seen all year.

A couple of thoughts, for those who care:

This movie NAILS what it is like to be a young college kid just filled up with testosterone and ready to be released into the wild. The competitiveness among your peers, the innocence and just the flat out fun it is to wake up everyday and have very little to worry about. This movie reminded me so much of what it was like to spend your summers in College Station and just have the world by the balls. Little class time and responsibility lends itself to the opportunity to have some of the most fun of your entire life. It amazed me that Linklater was able to capture that time of life to perfection.

And I know I'm going to get absolutely skewered by this, but I spent my time at A&M in a fraternity and Linklater also nails that kind of lifestyle almost flawlessly. That was my experience, but it happens in any sort of male organizations that we experience as young men. Whether it be sports team, greek organization, social club, sporting club, whatever really. As an 18 year old full of piss and vinegar just coming out of high school you think you are big ****. When you get to college you basically have the reset button pressed and you become a small fish in a big ass pond filled with some pretty aggressive sharks. Anything worth doing is worth earning, and its a good idea to accept that fact that you don't know as much as you think and look to the people who have been there awhile and have gone through the same transition as you once did. And when you get a little big, you get checked up pretty quickly (the scene where he brings up the fact that Bueter thinks the scout is real) Seriously, I can't state this enough, I've seen a lot of movies pertaining to the college experience and this was the most true to form I've ever seen.

And like TCTTS said when he started this thread, the guy who played Finn completely stole the show. That character just resonated with me. Perfectly understated hilarity.

and lastly, this movie was just damn fun. In such a ****** up world we live in now it was an amazing experience to sit down for 2 hours and just smile and have fun. There was no conflict in the movie, just pure fun. A perfect depiction of the innocence of youth where your life revolved around nothing but you and your immediate surroundings and the issues of the world were so far away. Such an amazing time in life.

I thought she looked familiar..
