re: Demons not aliens

There were birds hitting invisible spaceships, so the idea that there was no indication of space alien type tech is not true.

I've seen that Demons vs Aliens argument before, and it's a really good theory that works in a lot of ways... until you remember that there's no way Shyamalan was that clever.

And I know it's a movie and it's supposed to entertain, but any alien invasion movie I have a tough time with because of what Stephen Hawking said.

Basically that if a race of extraterrestrials were intelligent and advanced enough to have the technology to travel to Earth, then:

A) It would almost assuredly be hostile
B) It would take them about 15 minutes to conquer us

I don't buy the whole holy water thing since even Shamalamas character in the movie was like these things stay away from water.

He got us in 6th Sense so now we expect a twist in the end which because of our high expectations will only end in disappointment. Swing away.

Why travel impossible distances just to say hello? All about the resources and survival. To an advance civilization we're just bugs. And here we are announcing our presence to the galaxy.

He likened it to when Columbus sailed to America and encountered the Natives. So I guess even though it may not start out seeming hostile, it didn't really work out that well for them.

Or more likely it would just be an all out invasion from the get go, and in that case we're screwed.

Unless... we flew into their mothership with one of their own ships, and implement a computer virus into their mainframe with a usb drive... So we should be good.

Well, we could always have them watch all of M. Night's movies and then we'd have a common enemy to unite against.

The end of Sixth Sense may be the best twist ending of all time outside of the Star Wars saga.

To explore strange new worlds?

To seek out new life and new civilizations?

To boldly go where no man (urr whatever alien race/species we are discussing) has gone before?

So, everything happens for a purpose. That's the whole point of the movie.

So she HAD to be hit with a car so she could tell her husband to tell his brother to swing away when being invaded by aliens whose only weakness is water (of which there is a considerable amount in the atmosphere.) Anyone else have a problem with THAT being the grand plan? An otherwise meaningless death made meaningful because in her dying moments, the wife says "Swing away"? Of course, we're to infer that in those moments, she had some kind of premonition about the aliens weakness to water, and could only convey that is a silly, contrived manner that only makes sense due to a series of odd coincidences that come together masterfully like, you know, someone scripted it or something? Again, if the purpose of her death, or even the value generated is that her family is protected against the aliens, why doesn't the grand planner just have her say, "So here's the rub, you *****es are gonna be invaded by aliens, whose only weakness is water, so invest in super soakers." Everything would still be connected.

Obviously, the plotholes are enormous, but even the message is retarded. Everything is connected? Everything happens for a purpose? C'mon son, even if that IS the message you want to send, I would think a slightly less nihilistic vessel would be a more appropriate means by which to deliver it.

I don't understand this attitude at all. No love for storytelling in movies anymore?

Story telling? Are you insane? There was no story telling whatsoever, because story telling has to be plausible, understandable, intelligible. This movie was a series of idiotic happenings that he ties together with an absolutely flimsy message (due to the delivery) that makes no sense when evaluating at even a precursory level.

Not every movie has to be 100% realistic.

You just disregarded almost every single movie ever made. Especially in a fantastic story, you have to be able to take some license in the name of theme.

Are you one of those people that hates Raiders because Indiana doesn't actually impact the outcome?

That's just not right at all. The problem with signs is that he had a message on his movie, "everything is connected" but he wanted a twist ending, so he had to make it stupidly contrived and implausible so that it was a twist and people didn't see it coming until the end.

And that's ignoring the whole aliens invading a planet that had an atmosphere full of something that can kill them yet they don't even bother wearing protective suits?

Does none of that bother any of you? This movie was about two microns deep. It was so deeply flawed you couldn't find a good movie hidden inside there with an electron microscope.

I like Signs quite a bit, mainly for the characters. The movie does a good job of creating a mood, and there is humor in it as well. It's scary, too. The fallibility of the aliens simply serves to give the characters we've grown to like a realistic chance to survive; the ending is contrived, but that doesn't bother me.

It was ok.

Unbreakable was awesome.
I really enjoyed the Village.

I really wasn't surprised by end of 6th Sense.

Lady in the water sucked

Didn't finish The Happening

I thought it was good, but I liked the score more than anything, being a musician, I just have a thing for movie scores....

Random side note, I'm stuck on the Star Trek into the darkness score right now

James Newton Howard crushed that score. What a great opening chord for the movie.

I also thought his OST for The Village was fantastic with the violin soloist
