I don't even know what the point of reviewing an Adam Sandler or Michael Bay movie is for your average critic.

They have nothing in common with the target demographic. And they're clearly completely and 100% out of touch with what the demographic likes.

Tyler Perry stuff is the same thing.

I enjoyed Grown Ups 2 for what it was. I was not expecting much though.

Not just Sandler comedies though. Tons of comedies. I totally agree with you.

Good for him for making money. I dont get the criticism. He is not expecting everyone to like it, nor is he passing it off a high brow art. He's making money.

to quote Mitchell Goosen in the 1993 classic AIRBORNE:

quote:
Mictchell: Popeye, now there was a great man. Do you know why?

Wiley:
He never joined the Hairclub For Men?

Mitchell Goosen
: [BUZZER SOUND ]Wrong. Because his motto was: I am what I am. Do you think Popeye ever worried about what he wore just so he could get Olive Oil in the sack? I should say not, Dude. And do you know why?

Wiley
: He was gay?

Mitchell Goosen
: Because he is what he is.

Sandler is Popeye and he doesn't care what Rotten Tomatoes thinks of his movies as Paul Blart 2 passes $100,000,000.00 at some point this week.

Since this topic has run its course...

Best Sandler movie? I vote Happy Gilmore.

Bruce Almighty

Happy Gilmore will be the overwhelmingly most popular answer.

Billy Madison, then Happy Gilmore.

Spanglish is a good movie. It doesn't hurt that it also has Paz Vega and Tea Leoni.

For me, yeah, I enjoyed it for what it was.

My in laws were in town a couple weeks ago and all they could talk about is wanting to see Paul Blart 2 because the first one was so hilarious. I got roped into going to see it with them by my wife. It's as awful as you would expect but my in laws were laughing hysterically the whole time. I've never heard them laugh so loud. They are an example of people that eat this stuff up. It was truly awful though.

Pretty much this.

It's one reason why a board like this is helpful. It's other people that get the point of a movie reviewing it.

If you hated Horrible Bosses, I don't need to see what you said about Horrible Bosses 2. Same with The Hangover.

If you liked the originals...I listen.

All this proves is that the general public is getting dumber and dumber. He makes movies for the lowest common denominator.

You know, for the record, I just have to point out that liking these movies doesn't make someone stupid or an idiot or anything like that. The movie snobbery is getting a bit out of control here...

aSomehow, I think Sandler thinks that he is Judd Apatow without realizing just how far behind he is

Experiment for everyone: go watch Jack and Jill then immediately watch Billy Madison or Happy Gilmore. You'll realize then that Adam Sandler didn't just wake up and start sucking one morning... He makes the exact same type of comedy he did 20 years ago and you just grew up.

I doubt Sandler thinks he's Apatow he just doesn't care and makes movies that he'll likely get paid a lot from and it's fine and proof that not everyone (including people on this thread or the other one) actually hate Sandler that much. There's a place in everyone's world including probably yours for Sandler movies even today... Nobody wants to watch Schindlers List level cinema everytime they opt to see a movie.

Agreed.

Happy Gilmore doesn't make me laugh anymore (except for that part at the beginning where he sleeps with that old asian woman). But that's mainly because I've just seen it too damn many times. There are comedies I can watch over and over. And yes, they're "smarter" comedies...but still things people consider to be low brow, like Animal House and Caddyshack and Vacation.

Sandler just isn't as sharp as those guys. So his movies don't have quite the staying power. But it's a fact I had graduated from one of the best law schools in the country and worked alongside some pretty damn smart guys. And there was a time we all thought Happy Gilmore was funny as hell. You can be smart and laugh at those movies.

I should probably give Grandma's Boy a try. I haven't seen that one. And I haven't seen a lot of Sandler's later stuff other than Funny People. Which isn't really a "Sandler" movie.

Sandler and that whole late 80s/early 90s SNL crew were so damn edgy and funny. Most of his new stuff is crap, but I will never forget wearing out "They're all gonna laugh at you" on cassette in high school.

Adam Sandler movies where a bit after my time. I loved him in college when he was on SNL. Still, I thought the first few were kinda funny.

What is different about Sandler compared to Jim Carrey or Steve Martin, Sandler never grew up. He kept making stupid movies aimed at the lowest common denominator. Steve Martin didn't keep making The Jerk and singing about King Tut. He grew up.

Just an observation. He can do whatever he wants to and clearly he is making money at it, but it is clear he doesn't want to deviate the formula.
Jacques
How long do you want to ignore this user?
You're right but: The Jerk is still damn funny though.
It holds up better than a Sandler movie because it's better than a Sandler movie. And look, it's not like it's an insult to Sandler that he doesn't have a movie as good as The Jerk.

He's still entertaining a hell of a lot of people.

I'm sad to say that I use "I should say not, dude" and "I tell you no LIE, my friends" at least once a month. And the occasional "Chocolate stain, Blaine?"

I would change my name to "Liquid Drano Wannabe Bullwinke" if I weren't so lazy that I find even the idea of typing that into the login box exhausting.
