I don't know the audience for Paul Blart. But the audience for Sandler and Bay movies is teen boys.

Teen boys don't review movies for variety, etc.

At some point you just have to understand there's a lot of entertainment out there that's just not directed at you.

What happened with Sandler's last movie The Cobbler? It just disappeared basically. Has only grossed less than a million? It got terrible reviews but they all do. And they always print money.

Is anyone else waiting on Redstone's review?

If I'm not mistaken, that movie went straight to VOD.

Someone made a site that makes it easy for Redstone to make posts on here.

I really liked Dredd but those horrible numbers are because of how bad the stallone movie was and people not understanding the new one wasn't a sequel.

I took my son to see Monkey Kingdom.

The 8 people in front of us bought tickets to Paul Blart.

I tweeted about it asking if people really would pay to see it. The answer is yes. At least from my white trash East Texas relatives.

When I think of all the terrible movies I love, I find it hard to pass judgment on people that like movies like Paul Blart. I mean, what would Summer Rental get on Rotten Tomatoes?

15%

And I think I saw that twice at the movies. And you mentioning it makes me want to watch it tonight.

The fact that Paul Blart gets a sequel but Dredd didn't is embarrassing

This. I feel like there are a ton of movies that people are begging for a sequel for or take years to get people on board, but then some movies like Blart get greenlit ASAP. But I did think Kevin James in King of Queens was hilarious, not a fan of his movies.

I might be completely wrong here, but I think in many cases (for example Paul Blart) you have to look at who made the movie (Adam Sandler's Happy Madison productions) and realize that there are deals in place for certain producers, etc. that a certain number of movies are pre-approved for them when they sign deals with a studio. Just read the leaked Sony emails that shows Sandler's movies are hated by most Sony employees themselves, but the deal they made with Sandler means he gets to make them regardless.

Steadi, TC, Simplebay and others can explain it much more elequently than I just did. But it boils down to clout and multi-picture deals a lot of times, unfortunately.
Thanks for the insight, had never heard that before. I'm a noob, but I wonder if sequels are decided before the first movie is ever released and studios completely alter their marketing strategy for the first if they plan on releasing a sequel. Obviously this is the case for trilogies and planned series. For instance, I feel like with Dredd it was a movie that got bigger than anticipated once the movie was actually released in theaters and DVD and the studio never planned on a sequel but then it was successful. Whereas movies like Blart, or Grown Ups are probably approved for sequels before they have any idea how they will be received.

I don't think that was quite it. It affected it some, but that movie was 20 years ago.

Dredd failed primarily for the following reasons:
  • Rated R
  • Extremely poor marketing that emphasized 3D and came off gimmicky
  • Faceless and no name star

I like Karl Urban a lot, but he is not a box office draw.

I didn't see dredd in theaters or when it came out on dvd because all i could think about was that stallone movie. So when I saw the previews (what little there were) I was like, "pass". Then on a whim I was on netflix and wanted to shut my brain off for a few and gave Dredd a shot.

These two are sort of the same thing as I said. since no one could recognized or knew Karl Urban and thought the marketing was gimmicky they just associated it with the stallone movie.

Unfortunately it's hard to land a bigger name star for a role that requires them to wear a mask the entire time

I went and saw it because my cousin was in it. She played Nadia and did all of her own stuntwork. It was her first break and awesome seeing her on the big screen, even if it was for a movie as bad as this one.

It was also hurt by being a nearly scene for scene ripoff of the movie "The Raid: Redemption", which was a far superior film.
heddleston

actually The Raid ripped off Dredd. Dredd was in production hell for a real long time and The Raid ended up coming out first.

Interview with Dredd director

quote:
The Raid has arrived in the last couple of months and Dredd is suddenly attracting a lot of comparisons to that, even though you were obviously already in production two years ago. Is that a problem for you?
Garland: I guess it's just unfortunate timing, and we'll see if it ends up mattering. At least what we've done though won't take away from the incredible achievements of that film. One thing that one can be aware of, having worked on a film with a very similar narrative, is that they've done something pretty extraordinary considering their resources. They've done something pretty extraordinary anyway! So all power to them.
BTW, both movies are f-ing awesome, so I don't give a sh*t about their similarities. Dredd has Karl Urban. The Raid has Iko Uwais. Both kick ass in different ways.
