I saw The Theory of Everything, Birdman, and American Sniper. Personally, I thought Keaton's was the best performance of the three, but I have no problem with Redmayne getting the Oscar. Cooper's performance, while great, didn't impress me as much as Keaton's or Redmayne's. The biggest snub of this year was for Best Supporting Actress. Emma Stone was absolutely robbed. (And yes, I saw Boyhood. Patricia Arquette was not better.)

I have not seen all the best actor nominees from this year - but I still think both Ralph Fiennes in Grand Budapest and Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler are two of the more enjoyable performances I have seen in years. Guess there just isn't room for em all.
Definitely a crowded year for Best Actor. I think both of these would have won in a lot of years.

Until American actors can start doing Southern accents better than British actors (Robert Duvall excluded), I have no problem whatsoever with said actors whiffing on the award. Good movie, good acting by Cooper, but that accent was so bad it was distracting. "Was it Mew-staffa?" Ugh.

Patricia Arquette was absolutely better. She played a much larger and more important role in her movie, and she played the role over 12 years.

Emma Stone was a secondary character who's main purpose in the movie was just to yell at the main character in one scene about how worthless he is. She was onscreen far too little and was far too unimportant to the story to say that she should've beaten Arquette.

Don't hold your breath. There's a reason those British actors are better at the Southern accent.

Oh I'm well aware of that. Just saying that after a few hundred years, you'd think our fellow countrymen could pull it off decently.

By the way, I LOL'd at the the very first point on the map she used to indicate "The South" being smack dab in the middle of Texas.

Oops.

One of the overlooked aspects about Birdman was how the cinematography affected the acting. Most shots were around 10 minutes long which meant anything, from a wrong line to a missed step, could ruin the scene which preceded it, even it had been perfect. Per EW:

quote:
By the time all of the creative principals came together in New York, Keaton says, "you had to be word-perfect, you had to be off script, and you literally had to count your paces down to the number of steps you needed to take before turning a corner. To pull it offconcentrating on your performance and the nuances of the story, then add in the technical stuff, and then add the perfectionistic nature of me, and of Alejandro and Chivo, who are beyond perfectionisticwell, that's what gets me turned on. When things start to get that hard, that's when I get interested."

Odd, I thought one of the strengths of his performance was that he had one of the better hick Texan accents I've seen on film. I absolutely bought him as a Texas country boy.

I thought the baby gave a pretty wooden performance.

Michael Clarke Duncan for The Green Mile absolutely deserved the Oscar over Michael Caine. Even Haley Joel Osmott in The Sixth Sense should have won.

Training Day was still a great film. and Denzel was snubbed for Malcolm X and Hurricane. Penn won for Milk, which no one remembers now.

How he didn't win for Malcolm X, I'll never understand. Probably the best acting of his career.

Especially considering he lost to Al Pacino from Scent of a Woman.

Pacino had an IOU for the award after having several Oscar-worthy performances but not ever winning.

Leo in Wolf of Wall Street.

Although hats off to MM for Dallas Buyer's Club, I certainly see how he won.

I don't think you can say Leo got snubbed last year. He was great, but so were MM and Chiwetelu Ejiofor. Ejiofor would have gotten my vote.

Leo will get his "career" Oscar next year with Inarritu's film.

Leo didn't even come close to McConaughey or Ejiofor last year

I wish they released Oscar voting each year. I bet Keaton came damn close to winning.

I can't believe it took this long for people to start mentioning Leo. Every time I hear the phrase "Oscar snub" I immediately think Leo. Guy is incredible. His angry monologue in Django Unchained is severely underrated.

I mentioned him about 5 or 6 posts into the thread.

Agreed. His accent was spot on. I think texans hold other Americans to higher standard when trying to affect our accent. Brits seem to get a pass on American accents.

Look, you may have thought he did a good job at pulling off the accent, but "spot on" is pretty well....wrong.
There were multiple times in the film in which in was nearly laughable....very distracting, as I wrote earlier.

Robert Shaw wasn't even nominated for Jaws. Scorsese and Hitchcock both got a lot of directing snubs.
