Philip Seymour Hoffman in Boogie Nights

Joaquin Phoenix in Her
Bruce Almighty

Has Lt. Dike from Band of Brothers been mentioned yet?! Screw this guy.

On the other hand, Captain Spiers is the direct opposite of everyone mentioned in this thread.

Ross on Friends.
Ross would say "doesnt matter, had sex" which I think eliminates him.

Toby and Upham are great nominations.

I don't think that's what we mean by pathetic.

Yeah if I was to stick to the prompt of choosing someone "PATHETIC" then Prince Edward has to be the winner.

Longshanks was messed up and ruthless but not pathetic. Same could be said for the elder Robert the Bruce. Ambitious, manipulative, and underhanded but not really pathetic.
Lots of the posts on this thread do not seem to grasp the difference between "I do not like him" and "pathetic."

If we acknowledge the Star Wars prequels, then Anakin Skywalker needs to be mentioned.

William H. Macy has made a whole career of playing pathetic characters. That said, my vote goes for his character in "Boogie Nights".

For TV shows:

Elvin on the Cosby Show
Skippy on Family Ties

Movie:
The other sergeant from Platoon, the one played by McGinley, or Junior from the same movie.
Private Pyle in Full Metal Jacket was also pretty pathetic.
Zombie Jon Snow

Also the son in law on Last Man Standing the Tim Allen show. He is a real wuss and liberal foil for Tim. They make him out to be such a sissy. Great for tims one liner insults though.

Mr. Potter from "It's A Wonderful Life."

However there was a SNL skit that righted the "wrong" of Mr. Potter's evil ... and it was good.

In honor of Deadpool opening last weekend, I nominate Weasel, the bartender.

Spoiler alert

"I would go with you, but I don't want to."
Turns to the blind lady
"Wanna get f***ed up?"

End spoiler
