quote: The other was Them Crooked Vultures at Stubbs a couple of years ago. Might have left that too except I was on John Paul Jones' side of the stage, but about 8' away from the speakers. Hung in there...felt like the Maxel guy.
I was at that show - it was a great one. I don't remember it being overly loud, but I was about halfway back.
I was in a club in Houston around 90-91 over off Richmond. Was called Avalon, we were there just like a normal night and all of a sudden a curtain went up on part of the dance floor and the 80s band Flock of Seagulls started playing.
We had no idea they were there and didn't care one way or the other.
But I don't know wtf was with the sound because tha was THE loudest system I've ever heard. BLEW MY EARS OUT. Seriously they were ringing for days.
I still remember it now almost 25 years later. YIKES!
Front row for John Fogerty Blue Moon Swamp Tour in '97 at the old Austin Music Hall. Had just flown home after a vacation to the left coast. Three days previous to Austin, front row at the Cuthbert Amphitheater on the Oregon U., campus in Eugene.
quote:I can't imagine a band louder than Motley Crue. I heard ringing for a good two weeks after that one. Joe Satriani in a Trees club show is number 2 in loudest shows I've seen
+1 for Crue. Saw them on the Dr. Feelgood tour, ears rang for days.
I've been to a ton of metal shows and they were all extremely loud but the one that stands out for me was Danzig at the Gypsy Tea Room in 2005. Just a crescendo of distorted noise really.
Judas Priest/Megadeth/Testament @ Reunion Arena in 1990 was pretty damn loud too.
Probably a tie between Candiria @ CBGBs and Chevelle/Five Finger Death Punch at Irving Plaza. CBs always had horrible sound so those hardcore/metal bands could go in there and just destroy audiences with distortion (sometimes it was even on purpose).
Had a buddy go see sunn o))) years ago and said his body hurt after the show
In the 90s, Nine Inch Nails played deep ellum live..small venue and you could not hear yourself think..
Honorable mention to any show at the Bronco Bowl.
Interesting that both of you thought it was too loud. I brought ear plugs but did not use them. I was in the first row behind the pit. Great show by the way.
Timely thread... My ears aren't right after seeing Jack White at the Austin Music Hall on Saturday. By far the loudest concert I've been too, but well worth it!
My Bloody Valentine, shoe gaze pioneers, at the South Side Ballroom in Dallas. I knew it would be loud due to their reputation. It did not disappoint. You knew you were in for some decibels when they hand out free earplugs as you walk in. Anyway their sound is guitar driven layered run through an unbelievable amount of effects. Kevin Shields is awesome. Here's his effects setup...

Anyway loud throughout. At the end they always play the same song. You make me Realize. There is a break in the middle of the song. They take that break and stretch it into a 13 minutes of noise. Been doing it for years. People have coined it the holocaust. It sends some people who aren't aware out the door. I literally felt the sound waves. With plugs fully in my ears were ringing for days. Amazing show. Here's a snippet....
