I've actually seen both.

Wait, so Saving Private Ryan lost to THAT movie?!?!?!?! I saw SPR in the theater, and I'll stop and watch it anytime I see it on TV. I saw SiL on Cable, once maybe twice, and it was about as "Meh!" of a movie as I can remember. Nothing Oscar worthy at all.

What! That won an oscar?! I mean, I liked the movie, but in the same way I like A Walk to Remember or the Notebook. It's good or pitiful girl days, but it's not oscar worthy.

I hated... hated The English Patient. Still remember the night I thought I would be a great boyfriend by renting it for the girlfriend. Towards the end, when she said out loud what I had been thinking,"This is terrible", I knew she was the one.

I could not finish Crash or English Patient. Both were very painful to watch so I gave up.

I don't understand why Crash gets panned like it does. It was heavy-handed and pretentious, but it's far from a bad movie imo.

IMO, it was a bad movie. To me it had absolutely no business being nominated.
i agree it shouldn't have won. The nomination isn't atrocious to me. But I still don't get it. I thought all the stories intertwined in a clever way and the acting was good.

I liked both Crash and Shakespeare in Love though didn't think either should have won.

I saw SPR eleven -ELEVEN! - times in a theater. I'm a big WWII buff and I felt like I was actually there. I was so absolutely livid when Shakespeare in Love won.

For me Annie Hall, Chariots of Fire and Shakespeare in Love because Imuch preferred movies also nominated those years - Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Saving Private Ryan.

This could also be posted on the "Confession" board, but I enjoyed the movie Crash. But not cause I thought it is was a good movie, but because it had Ludacris in it. I haven't seen it since so I really don't remember anything that happens in the movie.

It's a tie for me. Out of Africa and The English Patient are terrible because they're insanely boring and uninteresting. I didn't like Crash either, but at least I didn't feel indifferent about it.

I think a more interesting question would be to pick which movie from a particular year was more deserving. For example, I really liked Argo but believe both Zero Dark Thirty & Django Unchained were more deserving of the Best Picture Oscar.

Tom Jones probably gets my vote as the worse ever, but it was also a pretty weak year.

I liked Dances with Wolves, but Goodfellas was the much better movie.

People who are saying something other than Tom Jones have never seen Tom Jones.

I have never seen Tom Jones, but of the ones I have seen my pick for worst is Titanic. I

I thought Titanic did some things well, but dragged way too much to get best picture.

I thought Argo and ZD30 were both really well done and have no arguments that they should not have won. Felt like maybe Argo left a little something missing with the interaction between the couple, but I couldn't quite tell you what it was. Otherwise neither one has any glaring problems.

I thought Argo was good, but not quite best picture-good

Of recent years, I would have put
Traffic over Gladiator
iarattu's Babel over The Departed
Brokeback over Crash
The Aviator over Million Dollar Baby

Inglorious Basterds over The Hurt Locker in what was a super weak year.

Oh and

the Grand Budapest Hotel over whatever actually wins this year

I didn't have a problem with "The English Patient." I was able to sleep through pretty much the whole movie without anything waking me up or bothering me.

You should watch Amores Perros then. Same type of movie, except good.

Could the fact that no one has seen one of the winners make it the worst choice ever? Has anyone seen (or have a desire to see) The Artist?

If there was ever a time for the Academy to show off how artistic, intellectual, avant garde and better than everyone else, it was picking a limited release silent film as the best picture of the year.

How did Rainman win best picture? Must have been an awfully weak year. Hoffman was great in it, but what else did that movie have?
Bruce Almighty
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Rain Man won in one of the weakest years ever for the Academy Awards. But a good way to win an award is to make a movie about some kind of mental illness. Almost guarantees at least a nomination.

Or anything to do with racism. See: Selma, 12 Years a Slave, Crash, etc.

In recent times...Chicago, English Patient, Crash. Although most years I can think of at least 2 nominated films that deserve it more than the winner.

It was a great example of Oscar lobbying at its finest. Horrible selection over Saving Provate Ryan and I will never understand it.

Crash was awful for the award. I don't think it was a terrible movie, just dumb. Same with Shakespeare in Love. And I didn't think Titanic was great compared to its competition. Good Will Hunting and LA Confidential were far superior films in my mind.
