Almost every movie in every list above that I've seen was a waste of my time. This thread has convinced me to stop watching "awards" movies.

Bring on the Star Wars sequels, anything directed by Richard Linklater, Cameron Crowe, or John Hughes (RIP), and some live concert DVDs.

I'm a shallow man.

I'm a sucker for Titanic. If you put aside the cheesy love story, that's damn good filmmaking. (And music.)

I also liked Shakespeare in Love, but its a sham that it won over SPR. I also hated No Country for Old Men, but I assume I'm in the minority there.

I'm not saying it's a bad film, but there are two much better movies in my mind that year.

Forrest Gump was great, and deserving, but The Shawshank Redemption was the best film of 1994

Add in Pulp Fiction, and that was a pretty strong year.

Pulp Fiction gets my vote for that year.

Disclaimer: Haven't seen Shawshank.

Can't believe the No Country For Old Men hate in here.

Is A Beautiful Mind better than LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring?

IMO, FOTR is definitely Oscar-worthy.

I normally love Coen brothers movies, but I barely made it through this one. To be fair, I didn't really care for the other nominated movie that year that I saw, There WIll Be Blood, so I don't have a better pick from the nominees that year.

FotR was a victim of being the first int he trilogy. Return of the King was basically a "yeah the whole series deserves the award"
Bruce Almighty

1994 was one of the greatest years in film history. I thought Pulp Fiction should have won but was probably too edgy. Forest Gump, Shawshank and Lion King which wasn't even nominated were all great that year.

Lion King wasn't nominated? That's surprising. Beauty and the Beast got one and Lion King is much better.

2012 - I thought Silver Linings Playbook was better than Argo...but very close
2003 - Agree that RotK was just given to the trilogy. I thought Mystic River was the best movie that year
2000 - Although Gladiator was epic, I thought Erin Brockovich was the better movie
1997 - Good Will Hunting or LA Confidential should have won over Titanic
1996 - Should have been Jerry McGuire or Fargo
1995 - Hard not to give it to Braveheart. But Babe was an incredible film. I'll watch it everytime I come across it.
1992 - Battle between Unforgiven and A Few Good Men. I think they got the right one (Unforgiven).
1989 - Should have been Field of Dreams
