my thoughts on the tattoos:

In the photo he's wearing a latex glove on his right hand, the same kind that tattoo artists wear.

All of the tattoos on his right side look clean and professionally done. All of the tattoos on his left side look sloppy and hurried. From the picture it looks like he probably went into Arkham with the good ink we see on his right chest and right arm, and then inked himself with the "hahahaha" tattoos and the "damaged" tattoo on his forehead during fits of madness.

I think that Leto's take on the Joker will be modern, original, and downright insane.

Here is another thought, maybe we see him leave Arkham and he has all of those tats, even the stupid damaged one, but he uses all of the white facepaint to cover them up

The problem with that post is that those were reactions to Ledger's casting, when it was first announced and before any idea of what Ledger's Joker would look like. In the current case, people have no problem (for the most part) with the casting of Leto. The uproar stems from the picture that is starting to take shape of this iteration of the Joker.

The fuss about the Ledger casting had no real foundation to stand on (much like the fanboy uproar over Affleck being cast as Wayne this time around); however, if the Joker publicity photo above is real then there is at least a legitimate, tangible reason for gripes.

Personally, I'm not a fan of it based on gut reaction but I'll give it a chance to grow on me. IMO it just makes Leto's acting that much more crucial to this movie - he now has an uphill battle to sell this Joker to the fans. Almost puts him behind the eight-ball.

I think this fan Photoshop clears up a lot of the issues. Maybe he'll have his shirt on for most of the movie. The forehead tattoo is another issue though.

I am okay with damaged if it is shown for a second and then covered up with his white face paint later on or makeup. I really like this look in this fan edit

Agreed that the shirtless tattoo look is a little over the top - actually I like the general look/idea, I just hate the content of the tattoos themselves - but this looks like the same old sh*t we've seen a hundred times before. You guys really want something this been-there-done-that and generic? Let's at least make room for a little imagination.

Only thing I like about that picture is having the Joker be pretty buff. In some versions he is. Personally, I trust Leto as an actor to nail the role. He has proven it many times in his career.
