Return to Oz got crushed by the critics but I love that movie. It's my understanding that it's the most faithful to the actual books.

I saw the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre when I was 5 or 6 at a friend's house. Scared the living crap out of me. I became convince Leatherface lived in Killeen. Which probably wasn't much of a logical leap, come to think of it...

Also saw Jaws around the same time and the Ben Gardner missing eyeball scene scared the hell out of me.

Glad I'm not the only one who ET jacked up. Apparently we watched that as a family on a night that it was my turn on the bottom bunk, and I freaked out so bad screaming "ET IS GOING TO GET ME" that my family still talks about it.

I still can't watch that movie without a strange unsettled feeling

Jurassic Park as a kid took me a long time to stop having nightmares about Raptors coming to eat me.
we can pickle that

Didn't read the whole thread so I'm sure these have been mentioned, but my two big ones:

-pennywise coming out of the shower drain
-the first time chucky had his "evil" face

I hate both clowns and human-like dolls to this day

My brothers had me watch "The Crate" from Creepshow. I didn't sleep for awhile after that.

The Wizard of Oz.

As a kid I hated everything about that messed up movie.

****ing cowardly lion, imps everywhere, flying monkeys. Terrible. Horrible. I don't see how how anyone likes that crap.

I first saw the original Amityville Horror probably in 1980 or so when I was about 6 or 7. I can't remember how I saw it because my folks would never allow me to watch it, but I'm pretty sure it was at a friends house. The scene when Margot Kidder goes into the girl's room where the rocking chair is rocking by itself, then she goes to close the window and is startled by the demon eyes gave me horrible nightmares for months and years afterwards.

I hadn't seen the movie after that for probably 25 years until I saw that it was on cable one day. Having remembered the nightmares, and having that scene burned into my psyche all those years I decided to watch it. When that scene appeared, I braced for it. After it was done, I thought "That's what had me scared all those years?!?! That was stupid!" Needless to say, it was a rather therapeutic moment for me. The whole movie was just so cheesy and dumb.

Hate that creepy ****er. I still won't watch it.

I'll add critters to the list.

Event Horizon when the previous captain is holding his own eyes after ripping them out of his head in the video they watch. Also when the main guy comes back and is all sliced up and eyeless.

Ever seen some of the still shots of that video? Pretty twisted stuff. In the movie it plays so fast you just get a sense of some really messed up things, but they put real effort into that violence and debauchery.

Yeah, I saw Event Horizon in middle school. Pretty psycho stuff in those flashes from their time in hell.

Feel free to laugh----I was 6 or 7 when I watched Tremors and for a good while afterwards, I could not stop my imagination from visualizing one of those silly worms swallowing me whole if I even dared step onto grass.

Event Horizon is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. Wonder if it still holds up.

I watched it on netflix a month or so back. It seemed like a pretty solid flick for being 17 years old

That river/snake scene in Lonesome Dove traumatized me for a month. I still get creeped out thinking about it.

Don't judge

Chucky when some guy jumps on a bomb and explodes

Green Beret when some guy is killed by a spike booby trap in like the first 10 minutes.

I wasn't very tough

IT. All of it. I hate clowns and don't understand why anyone has ever liked them.

Also Scream. Those two movies made me hate any and all horror movies. I was convinced that blood was going to come out of my sink or a mass murderer was going to murder me.

I saw these movies before I was 7.

Honorable mentions as a teen/adult - The Shining was terrifying and I still want to punch the person who said "it's just a thriller". Thriller my ass; I hate movies with creepy ghost or possessed children. Also Saw and Saw-like movies and shows give me nightmares. There is just something so freaky about sick people torturing and mutilating other humans for whatever reason.

All 3 of the ones that immediately popped into my head have been mentioned:

The Shining -- still goes down as one of my favorites. Remember the neighbor kid's parents having it on while I was over there one night. Couldn't sleep in a room with a mirror for months just because of how well Kubrick filmed the REDRUM scenes. Also the only book to ever truly scare me as an adult.

It - Everyone already touched upon as to why... but i definitely disagree with the poster who said it doesn't hold up nowadays. It's a TV movie so the production values obviously aren't going to be that great (and it's simply impossible to take Harry Anderson serious in anything), but the first half with the kids still holds up IMO. The book wasn't as scary (and had a god awful ending like most King's works), but there was a scene with a giant bird that to this day still freaks me out.

The Gate - Glad some others mentioned it. I've re-watched it a few times and find it hard to understand why it scared me so much as a kid -- I think it was mainly because it did a very good job of creating this "nightmare" feeling in a setting where there were no adults around to help.

Also have to give credit to this one, if for no other reason the ending song:

IT. I was 4 and I don't know why my parents let me watch that. Pretty sure I have not seen a minute of it since.

"The Tommyknockers". For whatever reason I refuse to watch it to this day and I have no idea why.

"The People Under the Stairs" when Roach shows his tongue.

Watching "Unsolved Mysteries" late at night lead to my irrational fear of alien abductions...

I don't know how I survived having my own room growing up.

Forgot about Alien. I was babysitting some kids while our parents went out and watched it, alone, when they went to bed. Dumb move.

Once a little older, got pretty spooked by Prince of Darkness and Hellraiser. F those movies.

I watched less than 5 minutes of Child's play on TNT when i was 5 or 6. I had nightmares for weeks when the first thing I saw was the doll kill somebody with a hammer.

Also...all of ET when I was 4-5
