This is what is confusing me as well? Why would anyone ever change their bet? They havent seen the clue, learned others wagers, or anything

I think what he is saying is they actually make their wager before the category is revealed. The show lies to us.

Final wagers are made after the category is revealed.

As to why somebody might change their bet...

At the time of final J! I was in second place, down by $3000. The only ways I could win were:

1.) I doubled my bet and 1st place got the answer wrong

2.) I bet nothing and 1st place got the answer wrong

She had $11,000 and I had $8000. She needed to bet $5001 to beat me, assuming I got the question wrong. If had bet nothing and she got the question wrong, I would have won.

I decided to bet everything but $1. As I finished drawing the last number of the $7999 I realized that my challengers were good at the arts, but not strong in science (the Final J! category was Health & Medicine 2013).

I wanted to change my wager to $0 because I thought it would give me the best chance to win, but I was too late.

That is why a contestant might want to change their wager.

Great interview with him from BaD Radio today. I finally understand his "wager for a tie" gambit now.

This still isn't clear.

Sock, can you list the steps? Currently, my understanding is:
1. Final category is revealed
2. All 3 contestants write down their bets
3. Clue is revealed
4. All 3 contestants write down their answer

Seems like you are saying that there is either a "step 2b" or "step 3b" where the 2 challengers are allowed to CHANGE their bet.

Can you clarify?

My best guess is:

Double J! is over. Category is revealed.

All 3 must put down a final wager.

Wagers are locked in for the champion, but there is time up until the Answer is read or a 'deadline' to change the wager for the 2 challengers.

Answer is then read by Alex, we hear the song song, and the rest is how we see it.

Maybe I'm wrong.

Never would have guessed I would hold on for 4 full pages of Jeopardy talk. Good stuff!

mbole11,

All three of us got the question wrong. Here was the clue:

quote:
There's news of the first lab test for this 10-letter condition the NIH [the National Institutes of Health] calls the leading cause of disability for Americans 15 to 44

I will put down the answer in another post...needless to say it was very difficult for me and I guessed "Obesity", which obviously isn't 10 letters. I thought about writing 3 extra "y's", but didn't.

I apologize for the confusion! bunk pretty much has it right.

Here are the steps:

1.) Double J! ends and the Final J! Category is revealed.

2.) The show goes to commercial break and contestants are told to what either "What is" or "Who is".

3.) Contestants than calculate their wager. At this point, the challengers can reset their wager. In fact, they did clear my wager and told me to write it in bigger numbers. The wagers are then locked in.

4.) The show returns from commercial break and Alex reads the clue. The J! music plays for 30 seconds and contestants write down their guesses.

5.) Alex goes to each contestant and determines if their answer is right or wrong. The winner is announced, fin!

Hopefully that helps clear it up!

So there is no chance for a "Suck it Trebek" or $Texas wager?

There is just a little bit of extra time that the challengers have to change their wagers after the Champion's wager is locked in. The only reason they would change is if they did more/different calculations and decided they wanted to go with another number. It's not like they get any more information and then are allowed to change.

Unthought Known,

You are correct! You would have won!

You have to write a number. it can be anything from $0 to whatever you have.

Sock - thanks for clarifying. However, in your step 1, did you mean to say that the CATEGORY is revealed? Because you said "CLUE".
