Another point... not everything needs to be a trilogy. I'd be totally fine with some one-off or two-off Star Wars flicks.

Should be far better than episodes 1-3. No more mega stupid characters, Lucas-written dialog, or acting so wooden you get the feeling Lucas is making fun of all of us.

Since Disney now owns Star Wars & Marvel, I'm thinking it's going to be 90 minutes of The Hulk smashing Jar Jar Binks.

I would actually pay to go see that

I want to see Romney or Obama come out and say their number one priority if elected would be to make it punishable by death to allow Lucas to have any interaction with Star Wars or India Jones. I would vote for that guy.

Highly doubt you will see Carrie Fisher. Last time I saw her she looked like Jabba and sounded like him too.

After sleeping on it, I'm having the same feelings...

I guess Disney feels the need to start up the "new" Star Wars movies with a trilogy, but maybe they'll change that after these first three. They've said their plan is for a new movie every 2-3 years, so maybe they'll go the Bond route and have more contained storylines in each movie while still keeping a sense of continuity between them. And with different directors and writers, maybe they'll each have unique tones to them.

I just read a good point someone brought up on another board:

Every Star Wars movie has had a May release. It's a Star Wars tradition.

Disney already has another movie set to open in early May of 2015. Some movie called "The Avengers 2."

I guess this means we'll be possibly be getting a new Star Wars movie for Christmas 2015. So Christmas the next four years will be The Hobbit I, The Hobbit II, The Hobbit III and (possibly) Star Wars VII. Merry freakin' Christmas!

Disney buying LucasFilm doesn't mean that it's guaranteed to be terrible. They bought Marvel and Pixar and those kept making great films, this will probably be the same. Lucasfilms will still be responsible for its success/failure...

I do think that there is NO way that continuing IV, V, and VI will work though, just like prequeling them didn't. There's no way to keep the fans happy 20-30 years later. They should go ahead and make a stand alone story and try to get Christopher Nolan to do it however the hell he wants imo.

I don't understand how anybody could be less than excited about this.

Disney has a better track record than Lucasfilms does.

Lucas hasn't made a good star wars film since empire. Hell the only three things (outside of the books) since empire that haven't sucked have been X-wing, Shadows of the empire, Knights of the Old Republic.

I'd be shocked if they actually make their 2015 target. The math just doesn't add up. For a film like this, they'd have to start filming by early 2014 at the absolute latest. Which would leave them a little over a year from now to hire a writer, write the script, hire a director, cast the movie and complete all of preproduction (designs, storyboarding, animatics, set-building, etc.). There's just not a chance in hell all that can be done in year's time. MAYBE if they've already secretly hired a writer and director, but even then it'd be tough. To put it in perspective, each of the prequel trilogy films started shooting TWO YEARS before their respective release dates. Each film was released in May, but started filming during the summer two years prior. If following that established pattern, they'd have to start filming Episode 7 in SIX OR SEVEN MONTHS. Granted, I doubt (or at least I hope) that the new trilogy will be as CGI-dependent as Lucas insisted the prequel trilogy be, but still, no matter what, these will be HUGE films requiring not only a TON of planning, and a ton of post-production as well.

Besides, it doesn't really make sense from a business perspective either. Disney will want to stagger their "billion dollar" properties every year. Avengers & Star Wars will never come out in the same year. Mark my words, we'll ultimately be looking at a May 2016 release for Star Wars: Episode 7.

Also, it appears as though the treatment that Disney purchased for the new trilogy was written by none other than George Lucas himself — as his last act before stepping away from the series.

I think whoever ends up ultimately tackling the story will have significant freedom to veer away from Lucas' treatment as they see fit. My guess is that it's more of a suggestion / loose guideline kind of thing.

I'll preface by saying that i hope the movie comes out sooner then later but i dont think they just abitrarily threw out 2015. I think alot of thought went into this announcement and they wouldnt have targeted 2015 publicly if they didnt think they could hit it. These people do this for a living. I for one hope you are wrong

Lucas probably already has 45 minutes of Jar jar/ewok grab-ass footage that's required to be in the movie. Disney just needs to fill in 1:15 to finish it.

I know how competent these people may seem, and I'm not saying they aren't, but these kind of projections are off more than you think. Avatar 2 and 3, for example, were initially announced for December 2014 and December 2015, respectively, but those dates have since been taken off the table. I doubt we even see Avatar 2 before 2015 now. This kind of thing happens all the time. I'll put it this way - based on the outline of events I gave above, a Star Wars movie by 2015 would be insanely rushed, and would thus suffer in quality. I'd much rather have them take an extra year to get it right (or get it as "right" as one of these movies can be).

btw, i'd love to see some debriefings with some of their writer experts asking Lucas to explain some of his dumbassery in the last several plot lines...

Here's a pretty good, quick summary from Devin Faraci of everything we know so far, what the films may or may not be about, etc. And he too expresses concern over the rush to meet a 2015 date...

Btw, I've only just started reading, but there's some good conversation going on in the comments section of the link I posted above. Some cool ideas for what these films could be.

(Badass Digest is actually known to have somewhat thoughtful and intelligent discussion in its article comments in general - it's not a lot of mouth breathers / basement dwellers.)

Hmm. A just-released interview with Mark Hamill, about the news, and I really can't tell what this implies...

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/10/31/mark-hamill-star-wars-episode-vii-disney/

The fact that Lucas, at this lunch, didn't straight up tell Hamill or Fisher that they might be included in the new trilogy I think says a lot. Wouldn't Lucas or Hamill or someone have been more clear about their participation? Then again, it seems weird to "warn" Hamill and Fisher exclusively this past summer, if they weren't to be involved in some capacity.

Like I said earlier, I'd rather this be an all new cast with all new story, but Hamill - even from that pic in the article - does seem old and haggard enough now, in a good way, to possibly play the the old, crotchety Jedi mentor roll, in some kind of subdued roll, but who knows...

The proper way to do this is through a brief cameo. See Stan Lee & Lou Ferrigno in The Hulk for a great example. There is no reason to force them into the plot of the new movie, especially when Ford has stated he doesn't want to reprise his role as Solo.

Just make a clean break, give them a brief cameo appearance to make everyone smile and nudge the person sitting next to them, and move on.
BillOnCapitolHill
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hamill cannot have a Ferrigno cameo. Ferrigno has no place in the new Marvel universe, giving him a nod was cute. If you are gonna have the SW universe and a guy that looks exactly like the last remaining Jedi in the universe, he isnt gonna play the Senator from Corellia for 2 mins.
Kampfers

Because this guy is so immediately recognizable as the last remaining Jedi in the galaxy.

And you're missing the point entirely anyways. I've been calling for a clean break from the old movies. Completely new characters. New storylines. New setting (mayhaps old republic?)

In such a scenario there is no room for Hamill's Skywalker, just like you observe for Ferrigno in the new Marvel universe.

So what happens to the Star Wars tv series we heard about? Hamil mentioned it in above article. Had forgotten about that. Is that cancelled with this news?

Same universe.

Seriously tho, take out jedis and the force and you are left with a gay version of BSG.

Might as well change the name too as it won't be "Star Wars" anymore.
