I'm mostly just glad it's out of Lucas's hands. Long over due.

i don't know why some of you have a problem with this as it can only be an improvement.

Lucas ****ed up the prequel and i think Disney should start with a prequel reboot if anything.

This can only be better than the prequels.

The Zahn books were OK, but hopefully they can come up with something better.

Oh, and Disney also gets the Indiana Jones movies too. We'll probably be seeing a few more of those that don't involve aliens.

So what happens to the original trilogy? Can we finally get a digitally enhanced version without the extra scenes!?

Assuming the Zahn books are the next movies, i really can't imagine anyone other than Ford, Hamill and Fisher in these movies. Unfortunately they're too old for those stories. Guess we will see what happens.

Summary of the zahn books?

X-wing series by Micheal Stackpole

Has a lot of mentions to the previous casts, and a lot of names used in the originals that could easily be built off with a new cast. Plus it's a good series, always thought it could be a good 7-9

Doesn't Lucas already have the stories for 7-9? I know I read that when he created Star Wars, he already had the entire story line mapped out and nobody knows really what the last three are really about.

Not happy. What are they going to do, use EU material? Lucas has been adamant that the EU is not canon. They already f'd up the prequels, lets now f up Zahn, X Wing, and others. 6 films is enough. No need to go the route of Star Trek and dilute the product any more than it already is.

That's a lie that he's told many, many times. Other times he's said that he never even thought about prequels or sequels. In truth he had no plan for Episodes I through III and only a vague idea about movies beyond Jedi, and most of those plotlines he killed by changing horses midstream and making Luke and Leia siblings. Had the love triangle worked out as per early outlines, with a changed Han heroically sacrificing himself, Leia taking up the mantle of leadership of the survivors of Alderaan, and Luke going off in search of the remnants of the Jedi (and finding his sister in the process)... think how awesome that could have been.

Instead, you got Ewoks and retroactive incest and a second Death Star.

Does this mean Leia is now a Disney Princess?!

As for the new movies, I doubt we see the EU, and if we do they will be reimagined based on some key elements (like Thrawn, or the reborn Emperor, or whatever). The easy answer is doing some transitional work with Hamill returning to play an older Luke who is struggling to rebuild the Jedi. Trouble with that is how you write out the rest of the core cast, because I don't see Fisher or Ford as part of the plan.

The truth is that the universe is vast enough that they don't REALLY have to tie it directly to the old movies. I think they will at first, but it's a pretty fertile storytelling ground even without Luke, Leia, and Han.

I don't think anyone else would play them. I don't think that Han and/or Leia would work into the story. Maybe Ford could get it done, but Fisher?

BULL****.

George Lucas NEVER had an entire 9 part series in mind and he sure as hell didn't have parts 1-6 mapped out when he made 4. This is the biggest lie he has peddled to the movie going public about this franchise. He made it up as he went along completely.

IIRC:

The most skilled Admiral of the Imperial Navy goes on a tear to destroy the Republic. He has no special powers, just intellect. He pursues the Emperor's storage shed, it is filled with cloning tubes Thrawn hopes to repopulate the imperial fleets. There he discovers an Jedi Master (cloned) that isnt a sith, but is dark. There was a lot in these books that I skipped over. But its a a great trilogy.

But that is outside of Zahn.

I believe the Thrawn Trilogy is the gold standard of the EU universe. I stopped midway through the Yuuzhan Vong series. Now they have a Darth Krayt and Maul got reborn in the cartoons and Vader had secret apprentices, etc. WTF? SW is just getting too big and convoluted IMHO.

Best thing they could do imo is just use the star wars universe but completely break from the Lucas stories. I wouldn't be too excited about them using any of the EU material.

What they should do is make a Shadows of the Empire movie using avant garde animation (similar to Tartakovsky's Clone Wars) but darker. They already have a story and soundtrack.

This. I really don't want to see any of the original cast - from any of the previous six movies - in the next trilogy. If they want to make reference to the Skywalkers or Vadar, etc., that's fine, but we need to see completely new characters and completely new story. Though, what I imagine will happen is someone like Harrison Ford or Hamill will have some kind of "surprise" cameo halfway through and then have some kind of honorable death at the end of the first film. Think something along the lines of Leonard Nimoy in the Star Trek Reboot (who didn't die, but won't be in the next film).

And I hate to break it to some of you guys, but they're not going to adapt any stories from any of the books. Whatever route they choose (or have already chosen, it sounds like), Episodes 7, 8 and 9 will be 100% original material. I can guarantee you that.
