"I had to be at this there crossroads at midnight, to sell my soul to the devil.

Well ain’t it a small world, spiritually speaking, Pete and Delmar just been baptized and saved. I guess I’m the only one that remains unaffiliated."

You ain't no kind of man, if you ain't got land.

I'm the damn paterfamilias!

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Ulysses Everett McGill: The treasure is still there boys, believe me.
Delmar O'Donnell: But how'd he know about the treasure?
Ulysses Everett McGill: I don't know Delmar. The blind are reputed to possess sensitivities compensating for their lack of sight, even to the point of developing paranormal psychic powers. Now, clearly seeing into the future would fall into neatly into that category; its not so surprising then that an organism deprived of its earthly vision...
Pete: He said we wouldn't get get it. He said we wouldn't get the treasure we seek on account of our ob-stac-les.
Ulysses Everett McGill: Well what the hell does he know, he's just an ignorant old man?

Wouldn't we look like a bunch of Johnny-come-latelies, bragging on our own midget, doesn't matter how stumpy.

Angry with your parents for taking you to a movie on your birthday? I care not how you feel about the film, but what kind of spoiled little ******* were you for being angry with one of your birthday gifts?

I feel for your parents.

Alois von Schweinsteiger:

No, it's because a movie that pretty much everyone likes (regular joes and critics) was summed up to you as the worst movie you ever saw. That's trollanese. You only posted that to rile people up. I'm fairly certain you didn't like the movie, I'm not doubting that (and it's fine to post that in a thread), but the way you phrased it is how a troll works. And that's what you did.

If you would have said "it's not my favorite" or "I didn't like it"...that's in a completely different league than one of the worst movies you've ever seen.

And if it truly is the worst movie you've ever seen, you obviously have terrible taste. Oh look, I can troll too.

Chalk me up as a real life troll then. Because anytime this movie is brought up in real life discussion I've said the exact same thing. The only differences are. I also mention another movie and texagers loose their minds. Guess you gotta love the internet

Poor you

I take it you are surprised quite often, then.

Ratings: 7.8/10 from 132,676 users

Or, better yet 69/100 on Metacritic

quote:
Chicago Tribune 100 A wildly original movie with astonishingly varied moods and influences.

quote:
Salon.com 90 From moment to moment, O Brother, Where Art Thou? is a pleasure. But when the Coens are really cooking, when the acting and the conception and the music all come together, it's something more -- Dogpatch rapture.

quote:
Dallas Observer 90 Clooney has become a movie star, and the Coens have given him his very own "It Happened One Night." The man, and the movie, are downright bona fide.

quote:
The New York Times 90 It is, all in all, a rambunctious and inspired ride in which the Coen brothers' voracious fascination with the arcana of American popular culture and their whiz-kid inventiveness reach new heights of whimsy.

quote:
Washington Post 90 It's a new new thing, classic myth from both literature and the movies, commingled, set to great folk music, and untrammeled by any sense of predictability, urgency, realism or believability but hypnotic, graceful and seductive.

etc, etc, etc.

And with 23 of 30 critics reviews as positive regarding this film, I'm sure it's everyone else that has terrible taste in movies.

Poor you that you pass thru life with a 12 foot stick up your ass; or, more appropriately, poor the rest of the world for having to suffer you.

Ulysses Everett McGill: Woo! Hot Damn, son I believe you did sell your soul to the devil.

Lund: Woooooooo-wee. Boy, that was a miiiighty fine a-pickin' and a-singin'. I'll tell you what, you come on in here and sign these papers here and I'm a gonna you ten dollars a piece.

Ulysses Everett McGill: Uh, okay sir. But Murt and Aloysius will have to sign Xes as only four of us can write.

Re: the negativity posted earlier, the movie advises a remedy for that...

"Well, as soon as we get ourselves cleaned up and we get a little smellum in our hair, why, were gonna feel 100% better about ourselves and about life in general."

It wasn't until about the fifth time I watched the movie that I heard/"got" that line. Possibly the height of Everett's quick-thinking on display in the movie.

Of all the great quotes in the film, the one below sticks with me (apart from Hot d***! It's the Soggy Bottom Boys!).

Ulysses Everett McGill: Say, uh, Cousin Wash, I suppose it'd be the acme of foolishness to inquire if you had a hair net.
Washington Hogwallop: Got a bunch in yon bureau, Mrs. Hogwallop's as a matter of fact.

I love this movie and The Big Lebowski. I can watch both endlessly. Really, every line in both movies is funny or directly sets up a funny line. The Coen Brothers just know what they're doing.

The thing is, a lot of this stuff wouldn't necessarily be funny in a script. It's acting and directing and just the entirety of the movie.

I can see though where some people just don't get the humor. You either think "Damn! We're in a tight spot!" is funny or you don't. I have trouble myself explaining why it's funny. It just is.
